There where reports about Sony looking into this even before the PS3 launch. Such a sale wouldn't impact the PS3 at all though, as using external chip producers is exactly what the XBox and the Wii are doing for instance. Sony would end up either buying the chips from the company who buys their chip plants (most likely) or they buy them from other Cell makers like IBM. But saying that - I would be more than happy to have it put down as non-sensical rumours and no truth to it!
