They WANT consumers to snap up the 60GB because they want it gone from the shops as the 40GB will soon be joined by an 80GB model in the UK/Euroland - as is now the case in the US/Japan. The 60GB will last until just about January (they've already said elsewhere that they've "not been making it for some time now"), when they'll introduce the 80GB model; either then or sometime in the spring. They can't announce the 80GB model now because they want to seem like they've been listening to their fanbase and reducing the price. And because it will retail for about the same price as the current 60GB model. So, it will be a no brainer to ignore the latter and buy the former, so they won't do that. Consumers, those who in the know, are buying the 60GB model, not because it's price has been dropped but because they think it's their last chance to get backwards compatibility in a DelayStation3 console. What I want to know is, how will Sony and its dealers honour the replacement of a dead 60GB model in the future, when that model is dead? Will they replace it under warranty with a 40GB model that has a SMALLER HDD and NO backwards compatibility? Isn't that breach of the consumer goods act or something?! Anyway, eventually, either in the summer or for Xmas 2008, they might release a high-end model, to compete with the X360 Elite in all territories. I have no idea what the price will be, but it might have a Microsoft-teasing HDD size of either 160GB or 200GB. And that's your messed up lot for Sony's strategy! Over & Out. @ mobiletone:

Except that when you start being given percentage figures instead of actual sales figures you know someone is trying to hide something. You see, in the previous week PS3 only sold a measly 6700 machines. 20,000 less than the 360, so despite the increase it is still falling short by a long measure, shifting only about 18000 units. What's worse for Sony, is that nearly 90% of those sales were for the soon-to-be-discontinued 60GB backwards-compatible version. That is REALLY bad news for the senior executive that thought the public would want to buy a Chavtastic Gimped machine. So, PS3 sales are up 178%. Amazing. I think. I hope. I also hope that in late November - December the sales will absolutely BURST the damn chart. cos Sony know how to play the gaming industry. I know one person that is gettin the 60GB PS3 for X-mas, but thats cos my age group and type of people i know aren't really the type for gaming now, they think it's kinda childish. Well, one of my friends might get it after X-mas after price drop and if the 40GB price goes down. @7, it’s 178% increase over the average of sales per week/month (dunno which) in the UK. I think. Why it should take the efforts of us lot to dig around a story to find the facts while some lazy Sony press officer reproduces one chart track figure, is another story... @25

On a side note, bought my 40gb PS3 last Friday & I'm loving it! Unboxing Sony consoles gives me such satisfaction. Shame I suck at GT HD Concept! :( Also regarding @19 - Not sure, but I presume these sales figures only take into account four days of the ‘price drop’, so will be interesting to see the figures from 10-17th October when they are released.

That could mean anything. Until I see a concrete, honest statement that presents enough facts for me to form a valid opinion then I will refrain from believing a single word those soon to be redundant muppets at Sony choose to sling my way. There's no way you can make an informed judgement on PS3's sales performance based on the publication of one figure, let alone a percentage! It's laughable. I agree with 15.
