If the update was to start causing random system lockups, there would be no staff around to debug/fix the issue. Even an update this Thursday would be cutting things fine. 2) Sony probably want to avoid the situation where little Timmy's first experience of their PS3 on Xmas day is a 100mb system update. Timmy yanks power cord in frustration and bricks the thing. Then there's a torrent of "Sony ruins Xmas" stories on every internet forum on earth. After the U.S launch there were heaps of small updates to fix things, but did any of them happen in the week for Christmas?
