Sony officially unveiled yesterday the third-generation PSP, with a PS button, built-in mic and an improved LCD screen. Our friends at Engadget Japanese have learned a few more details about how exactly the screen has improved straight from Sony. Compared to the PSP-2000, the new 3000 model has twice the color gamut, five times the contrast ratio and, what we’re most excited about, the response time is twice as fast. The PSP-3000 is arriving on North American shores in mid-October.

Update: LCD’s response is twice as fast, meaning the response time itself is halved. Fixed, thanks everyone!

Its so damn obvious why they’re releasing this model. The PSP-2000 is as hackable as its older brother, however the newer PSP-2000 batteries are anti Pandora-able. So its possible this revision is just to stop piracy.

Hacking a PSP is so simple, its why most people do it.

I read that the new PSP model, the “PSP-3000″, will launch in Europe, the Middle East, Australia & New Zealand on 15 October 2008, but maybe on a Friday (that being the 17th) makes more sense for the UK market.

Either way, no doubt a new firmware revision will be present on it to catch those pesky “BitTorrent” / Custom Firmware guys (unless David Reeves is going to announce later at the Games Conference that Team M33 &/or Dark_AleX can continue with his blessing).
