Ever wanted to have an input on a game? Perhaps your very own character? Now is your chance. Game Republic, the developers of Folklore, are looking for one more Folk to add to the game. All you’ve got to do is design a Folk, illustrate it, give it a name, write a description and finally say what the unique attack is that the player can absorb from your Folk. If you’re looking for some inspiration, it might be an idea to check out the new demo on the Playstation Store.
They will be judged by a team at Japan’s Game Republic studios, including Yoshiki Okamoto (producer of Devil May Cry, Resident Evil) and the winning entry will be transformed into a real Folk, and put up for download on the PlayStation Store.
If anyone does enter this could you send us your work as we’d love to see it.

Good news for those eagerly awaiting Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4 (really, who isn’t?) – Ryan Payton, speaking from Kojima Productions on Tuesday, said that they were starting work on an English demo.
“As of tomorrow, we’re going to start working on the English demo… Anything I say beyond what I’m going to say is going to incriminate me and people are going to know what I’m hinting at.”
Cryptic stuff!

It’s a huge industry these days, but the games industry has featured its fair share of characters – nutters, geniuses, eccentrics and the like – in the past. In the spirit of enlightenment, we thought we’d start a semi-regular feature in which we introduce you to some of the industry’s most enduring legends. First up, take a bow, Matthew Smith.
To describe Matthew Smith as a games industry legend is perhaps wrong – he’s more of a myth. In fact, he’s the industry’s equivalent of Syd Barrett: a wunderkind who went off the rails spectacularly. Although, unlike Barrett, he’s still alive.
By the time he was 20, Smith had created what were then hailed as two of the best games ever: Manic Miner (1983) and Jet Set Willy (1984). Anarchic, hilarious platform-style games for the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, they were vastly successful. Smith, naturally, was under vast amounts of pressure to follow them up, but the third “Miner Willy” game, generally touted as Willy Meets the Taxman, never saw the light of day – and Smith self-destructed and disappeared.
Over at the Playstation US blog they have posted that PlayStation 3 users have made a massive contribution to the Folding project with their aggregated computation power, having now contributed over a petaflops of data in the quest for research into medical science and diseases.

Meanwhile, over at engadget you can read how IBM have worked with PlayStation 3 Cell processors to donate a supercomputer to the University of Maryland-Baltimore county. Using 32 Cell processors researchers are working to develop applications to harness that power. As they report “the supercomputer will dabble in visualization and computer modeling applications for aerospace / defense, financial services, healthcare / life sciences industries and weather.” Amazing.
Guys, there are going to be two dedicated Three Speech Warhawk servers - one is up now and ready to be used under the server name ThreeSpeech1, with the second server to follow very shortly.
Maximum number of players per game is 32, with a minimum of 8 to 12 players depending on the game. Each seperate game will last 15 minutes with a cycle of 8 games in total.

The British Academy Video Games Awards nominees have been announced and PS2 and PS3 games feature quite heavily. The actual event will be held on Tuesday 23rd October so we look forward to seeing how the games will do. It seems that gaming is fast becoming accepted as an equivalent of the film industry, which is great, and following the cinematic aspects/Hollywood actor-led motion capture of the likes of Heavenly Sword, the industry as a whole is receiving its due attention.

Featuring a selection of the best tracks from previous Wipeout games, the next addition to the series, Wipeout HD, will be available from the PlayStation Store and will run at 60 frames per second at full 1080p resolution. We’ve got our hands on some more information about the upcoming game, as well as five new screenshots.
* SIXAXIS support: use the motion sensitivity to control your anti gravity ship.
* Tracks: a selection of the most popular tracks from previous Wipeout games.
* Mag-Strips: the game will include the new feature from Wipeout Pulse (PSP) which temporarily causes your ship to be locked onto the track surface.
* Race Modes: there will be seven race modes - Single Race, Tournament, Time Trial, Speed Lap, Zone Mode, Elimination and Head-2-Head.
* Race Campaign: featuring a set of pre-defined race events for the player to battle through.
* New Weapons: The Repulser, Shuriken and and Leach Beam.
* Photo Mode: much like GT5 Prologue and Wipeout Pulse, you’ll be able to take screenshots in game and save them to your PS3’s hard drive.
* Online Multi-player: up to 8 players online, with the option of a “Team vs Team” mode.
* Community: a purpose built website where players build profiles containing stats, to compare with friends.
* Downloadable Content: the game will be expanded via downloadable packs on the PSN.
