We’ve got some answers out of PlayStation to a few of the question you put to us last week.
ONLINE USERNAMES
Online, it’ll be one user name for all games. You’ll get a master ID once you are registered. On some games, you’ll be able to set up your own buddy list. If you meet someone playing one of these games, you’ll be able to transfer them to your master buddy list. The thinking being that not everyone you’re playing Resistance: Fall Of Man with is necessarily someone you’ll be communicating with about other things.
BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
Phil Harrison has confirmed that backwards compatibility will be achieved via hardware, not software. As long as a game meets TRC guidelines there’ll be no issues – and this will be the case with 99% of games. No firmware update will be required.
DATA TRANSFER
The easiest way at present to transfer data from a PC to a PS3 is to burn in onto DVD, or use a memory stick or USB hard drive.
DOWNLOADING PS1 TITLES
Phil Harrison has also said that, from day one on the PS3, you’ll be able to download PS1 titles from the store onto the hard drive. These will only be playable on a PSP to start with in North America and Japan, but will work directly on a PS3 from the off in Europe.
Hopefully we’ll be able to clear up a few more points shortly.
I remember so many years ago, I went to my friend’s house to see his new PlayStation. The very first PS games we played were Battle Arena Toshiden and… ~Jumping Flash~ This title has been revealed to be amongst the first downloadable PSOne games available on launch date, and its gonna be a great experience playing that game so many years after the first time.
Playing those two games turned me into a PS fan. Thank you Juampi and PS!!

Just curious.. why aren’t PS1 games playable directly on PS3s from day one?

Ok, backward compatibility is achied thru hardware. But does that mean both the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer are included in the PS3 or just the EE? Sure, both are integrated on one chip on the latest PS2 models but what about the PS3? Does that explain why there are no visual improvements for PS2 games on the PS3?

Kamesen, I feel you there…I remember playing BAT and pandemoneum for the first time, after I shelled out 150 dollars to RENT a PSone….I was in the eighth grade…now I get a ps3, and to play BAT again may bring tears to my eyes. Long live the Playstation!

Well, atleast Europe will be able to play games directly on their PS3 from the start!…i’m guessing that’s probably when everyone else will get it (if not before..)

(oops, don’t mean to double post - But;) What about online usernames? If Europe is getting the PS3 last, won’t we get the pooey end of the stick, with all the crap handles?!
Hopefully, Sony will allow us to register our usernames earlier..

seriously good Q from Rayne there.

In response to Rayne’s question, PlayStation have just informed us that as of November 17 (American launch date) you’ll be able to register your usernames online at the PS3 store site via your PC, so Europe won’t lose out. Thanks.
