Following on from the images we posted last week on the new Xross Media Bar, here is some footage taking you through the web browser function… (you’ll have to ignore the slightly annoying voiceover).

As we will all be accessing the web using PS3 and this Xross Media bar, I wanted to see what our ‘community’ and of course ‘PS3′ stood with regard to networked gaming and the massive potential and opportunities for in-game advertising that will become very apparent with the introduction of the PS3 to the masses - I believe that there are 2 schools of thought
1 - ‘the lasting impact of in-game advertising is that games are going to get better…If in-game ads can offset some of the cost [of producing games for new consoles] and if gamers gain a better experience as a result, then it’s a benefit for the entire videogame ecosystem.’
Or does the game is
the game is the last bastion of commercial-free entertainment’. Gamers are a loyal and highly connected bunch, and the cost of offending them and intruding upon their virtual privacy could be a high one’.
oooh what say you all?

this battle’s been fought and lost/won (depending on where you stand) already. games are full of sponsors already. no big deal in my mind

If you dont care then maybe we need some one who does - dont you seer that the PS3 via the web access will make those opps bigger for the Corps out there. So im asking what is PS3 saying - let it happen or will the gaming community be against it and impose some sort of regulations - is what I am asking.

It would have to be low-key, tasteful, lower the cost to me, AND be relevant — I don’t want to see a Hummer driving through my Lord of the Rings games….

In-game advertising is ok (to me) as long as it follows these three rules:
1. The game takes place in the modern world/day.
2. We are allowed to avoid them.
3. There are zero micro-transactions. Even if they’re minimal and exceptionally priced, I don’t want to have to shovel through all that crap along with the occasional ad.
As far as the browser goes, I’m still not sold. Only six windows at once? I use a Mac and I do a lot of multi-tasking; I’m constantly opening and closing new and old windows/tabs. From what I can tell, there is no reason why I should switch from perfectly good Safari/Firefox to a limited console browser.
