Trade mag New Media Age is reporting that Virgin Radio will be the first radio station to make content available on the PS3 (also the Wii). The service will include content from other Virgin stations - Xtreme, Classic Rock and Groove. Next to the radio content, it will be possible to buy downloads, CDs and tickets, and watch videos.
NMA goes on to say -
The station, which prides itself on technological firsts, said that the MP3-streaming capacity of its Virgin Radio Player has made the deal possible as it is ‘one of only a handful’ of broadcasters using the technology. The consoles both have Flash capabilities, which allows them to handle the MP3 streams, whereas there are no embedded players for Windows Media or Real Audio files as yet.
James Cridland, Virgin Radio director of digital media, said the move was taken to strengthen Virgin’s availability in a changing media consumption market.
“People are used to having control in their media consumption. A lot of that comes down to us offering the right content, at the right time in the right way. The content will always be the same whether you’re accessing it through Sky, Virgin Media, online, on DAB or now through your games console,” he said.
Awesome. Glad to see that non game companies are supporting the console.

it would be even better if you could save music and podcasts on your ps3 this way that would be cool. http://Bluehedgehog.blogspot.com

It didn’t work for me. I clicked the Listen Now link like the directions said to do and the PS3 web browser came up with it’s save dialog. I saved it to my SD card and then tried to find it in the music section of the XMB, but it didn’t appear.
Did anyone else get it to work on their PS3?

Definitely cool news, but I really want to be able to stream KCRW Music most of all.

If PS3’s web browser had stronger flash support, or .pls support (like Winamp/Quicktime or something) for streaming, that would be glorious.

Oh great! I was wondering when the sequel to Jet Set Radio Fut…hold on here…what do you mean it’s NOT a game?
Well, I guess you could listen to it while I watch my system fold–oh, so I can’t listen to it while I fold, either? Bah. Wake me when the PS3 actually has a game out there worth playing (that hasn’t already come out a year earlier on the XBox 360.)
Seriously–things were better when Sony was focused more on games and gaming, and not trying to whore out inferior (to the other models of same format) next-gen media players as a priority.
Crap like this is a red herring, and nothing more.

At least the PS3 has a simple WEB BROWSER! Microsoft makes there own, why cant they port it over to the 360 in a update, pretty simple stuff.

Is there a way to keep the sound playing when browsing on another window? Apparently as soon as the radio page loses focus the sound stops, even if you don’t leave the browser…
On a side aspect, anyone knows a wireless keyboard that would have a range comparable to the PS3 controlers?

@9 -John,
I doubt it. The ps3 comtroller has a range of well over 100 feet. When I was testin the distance of the controllers I had to leave the building I was in.
