Ace Combat … simple plain fun shooting down bad guys with your missiles (Eagle one - Fox 2!).
Comment by Matthew — May 2, 2007 @ 11:10 am
Elite for the BBC in 2nd place - I loved that Cobra space ship. But the obvious choice (and obviously good!) GTAIII for the PS32 takes it - stunning, staggering, sick, moral panic has never been so much fun!!!
Comment by V 4 Vinten — May 2, 2007 @ 11:17 am
hmmmm, hard to choose just one….so i won’t, here’s a shortlist …..
HALF-LIFE 1 & 2 - just because.

THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND & its sequel Monkey Island II: LeChucks revenge - by LucasArts.
These are the finest graphic adventure games ever! They combined a great story, with fun characters, evocative music, and non-linear gameplay.
By today’s standards they are technically outdated. But every once in a while I do play throught them again. There popularity seems to be universal because whenever a game system such as the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, or mobile phone is illegally hacked- they are some of the first games to be converted.
Monkey Island is great- it would be lovely to see updates on the PlayStation Network Store. At £3.99 it would be a sell-out!

goldeneye.
head shots. one shot kill. surveillance cameras. speed runs.
it pretty much wrote the rulebook that many games still adhere to.
oh and 4 player pistols in the library with one shot kill was gaming gold.

Mercenary, escape from Targ (and the following games in the series from Novagen).
Either that or Carrier Command.
(both on Atari ST or Amiga)
both games with a story, non-linear play, and several ways to even play the game (esp in CC where you could either play it as a strategy game or a flight/tank game when invading islands, or just managing your resources and supply. Imagine Carrier Command now, in the multi-player world we live in.)

Without Doubt Final Fantasy 7 on PS1, totally blew me away and lost countless hours of my life trying to get 100% complete!!
Notable mentions have to go to :
Zelda (SNES)
Broken Sword - Knights of the Templar (PS1)
Super Mario world & Kart (SNES)
God what’s happened to games, nothing has been as good as these in ages!
Comment by bmaindj — May 2, 2007 @ 1:20 pm
Street Racer on the PlayStation. It was just a kart racer, but the characters were more colourful than the bland Mario-clones, and the tracks and racing were more addictive than Green and Blacks Milk Chocolate. It was easy to customise the races too, so I’d often pick a few favourite tracks and have massive 50+ lap races. If it went well, I could be laps ahead at the finish, and yet another race would see it go right down to the last lap. It was the quality of the handling and the subsequent cornering and racing that made it a great game. Sometimes developers just nail this stuff.
Fond memories of losing a heck of a lot of time to this one

Shining Force I (Genesis), II (Genesis), III (Saturn) (the turn-based RPG’s, not the action games)
The best part of these games were the large amount of unique characters that joined your party (like 40), including some hidden ones that you had to perform some weird side-mission to find. Also the area-based combat movement system was very nice. Definitely my favorite RPG series of all time.
Toejam and Earl (Genesis) is second place on my list followed by the Dragon Quest VIII (PS2) and Perfect Dark\Goldeneye (N64).

Downloadable SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS with enhanced PS3 graphics. Fix the framerate and the low-res textures, make it at least 720P and I’ll die a happy man. If ever there was a game whose potential was hampered by the tech, this was it.

I totally agree with Andronix and Laze. The Monkey Island series of adventure games are the best games I’ve ever played.
Hopefully the adventure game genre will see a revival in the future. Telltale Games seem to be doing well with the episodic Sam & Max games. Any chance we could see them appearing in the PSN Store in the future?
Comment by Poz3D — May 2, 2007 @ 10:31 pm
N64: Goldeneye. Still the best Bond FPS ever released, it just does everything right.
PS1: I always liked the Driver series. Was really fun… played it for hours. Final Fantasy gave me alot of hours on the PS1 too.
PS2: I played the first Call of Duty for ages! Metal Gear Solid… Gran Turismo 3 was good too.

DropZone by Archer Maclean on Atari 800XL - brilliant, fast, smooth shooter- still love it.
The original Tomb Raider on PlayStation - fantastic lead character and so much freedom in a well realised world.
Carrier Command on Atari ST - brilliant balance of strategy and action. Way ahead of it’s time.
Metal Gear Solid - for too many reasons to list.
Resident Evil 4- great story, weapons, decent length and damned creepy. Reply value galore too.
Comment by Gareth (GaF) — May 2, 2007 @ 11:12 pm
– Transport Tycoon - The best business game ever.
– Splinter Cell - The original was fantastic.
– Micro Machines V3 - with 4 people, this equalled Goldeneye as a multiplayer game I think.
– Gran Turismo (1-4) - The best driving games ever made. You can play it exactly however you want to.
– MGS 1 - The best story of the series, groundbreaking when it was released
– The ENTIRE Ace Combat series - I LOVE these games. Loosing AC6 to the 360 put my whole PS3 purchase in SERIOUS doubt, a mere week before PAL release. I still may buy a 360 for this ONE game.

Does anyone remember Walker for the Amiga? Oh, that so needs updating.
Exile was good.
Elite too.
WipeOut 2097 I think was the greatest of the series, great tracks, great choons, great racing.
But I think the best game ever, that I keep on returning to time after time, is…
Gran Turismo. Whenever a new arrived, it was played consistantly through to the release of the next version. Brilliant.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on Playstation
I played it constantly and got very little sleep over the Christmas holiday of year 2000. Even after the game was completed there was hours to be spent hunting down gaps.

Games that stand out in my memory …
SWIV
It loaded pretty fast (… on a floppy disk), and just kept streaming from there-on until you died or got to the end. Great booming sound, good graphic design, technically about as perfect as they come (no glitches, screenfulls of enemies, etc).
Pinball Dreams
Nice simple tables, good sound, decent physics and addictive as hell.
IK+ (C=64)
Just damn fun, and a bit silly. Nothing like watching them head-butting each other out, or the result of a groin punch.
More recently in no particular order, Beyond Good and Evil, Jack and Daxter (first - others good, but it’s the best of the lot), God of War, and Okami (pity the screen tears so much - that is inexcusable) really stand out from ones i’ve played.

I’d like to provide why these games are good as well.. anyone can come up with lists, but it’s nice to know “why” as well as the article suggests.
Atari 2600 - Combat: The first game console that was mass marketed and sold succesfully to create a video games market had this very simple military combat game that allowed you to use tanks, planes to battle it out. This very primitive game did allow for multiplayer and the use of both joystick and analog pads. Quite feature packed for the beginning of the home games console. Runner up: Pac-man, for setting the bar that for years to come, home console owners would NEVER get true arcade to home ports…until the 128bit generation.
Apple IIe - Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, first computer based RPG that felt dangerous.. you were living in this scary world of demons and orcs and you had to champion the good virtues of the Avatar to defeat evil, also one of the first games to use character traits customization. This was done by virtue of an ingenious Tarot card game and your selections determined your traits- genius. Developed by the now renowned Richard Garriott, aka Lord British. Runner up: Ultima III: Exodus, trumped by it’s sequel
Nintendo Entertainment System (NES): Contra, without a doubt, one of the system sellers of it’s time.. sure, we had the Nintendo mascots of Mario, Link and Samus and enough has been written about those guys.. but not enough credit is given to Bill and whatshisname. Everybody knows up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B,A, START. Good action, level design (port from Arcade), and the music. Gotta love that end credits music. Runner up: Ninja Gaiden for introducing the then relatively ununsed in-game cinematic scene.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES): The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.. as mentioned previously by a few posters… this game is a masterpiece of action RPG gaming. The cohesive graphics, text based storyline, music, gameplay was tight and immersive. This was the last great Zelda game in my opinion. Runner up: Super Metroid, seems the SNES was a platform that built upon earlier successes in the 8bit gen., but hey, good times were had.
Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64, as we all know, this game ushered in 3D home console gaming and set a bar for all future games to follow. Before this game, 3D gaming was dependent on “Mode 7″ tricks and flat pixels that scaled towards you and looked worse the closer it got to you, ie; Doom, Space Harrier. Runner up: geez, it’s hard to think of what else was good on the N64. ;P
Playstation: I am old enough to be calling the PS1 just Playstation so I will still call it that, even today.
Best game on this platform has to be Ridge Racer. OK, no joke. This was the 3D racing game that finally brought the arcade experience home for the masses, pixel for pixel and offer true CD quality music tracks. Remember, this is the very 1st game on the console series that we all now know and love, so it was a very important game, historically speaking. You could play a quick loading time game in the beginning and even have custom CD music play in the console after you load up the game. Where is that now, with a built in HDD and Cell processor, hint, hint??
Runner up: Final Fantasy 7, yes I know.. why am I putting FF7 after RR? In terms of the system’s time-line, I’d have to give RR the #1 spot because Namco was bold enough to produce for Sony’s then, very unknown system.. and for offering a true arcade to home port experience. This system had to prove to the early adopters and the eventual masses that a better alternative could be had than Nintendo’s. FF7 was there a bit later to seal that deal.
Playstation 2: Final Fantasy X, here’s where FF really shined.. true 3D environments (no more pre-rendered backgrounds), voice (no more reading!) acting really took advantage of the DVD medium of the PS2. The linear RPG gameplay was a bit limiting but FFX was a very well designed gaming experience that offered great characters, graphics, music and had an emotional storyline. Runner up: God of War 2, being the last great game of the PS2, GoW2 uses every trick in the book to craft a great, movie-like experience.
Playstation 3: it’s too early to tell, but Resistance is a good contender for now. Quite simply, it offered my first taste of next-gen. gaming when 20 Chimera are blasting away at me while a giant Spider is hurling wads of goop and trying to pummel me with it’s sharp legs. Throw in there: lag free 40 man online fragging and you have a very good pioneering PS3 game that will define what a good PS3 should be like for years to come. Runner up: Motorstorm, real time deformation of tracks, photo-realistic graphics with dynamic lighting and with real time physics and destructable environments and vehicles to boot… truely next-gen.

FFVII and GTA3 are in my tops, though I used to love my SUPER Breakout on the Atari.
Comment by Josh — May 4, 2007 @ 2:48 am
Soul Calibur - more to it, than Soulblade, otherwise I’d certainly have picked that
could the first one have had the better soundtrack? I think it might!
Dungeon Keeper - You’re the bad guy. The VO of your mentor is hugely memorable. The creatures (your minions) all have their own behaviour, and MISbehaviour, and surprisingly, you can jump into their bodies to control their assault against the plundering heroes. Simply ACE in multi, with similarly skilled opponents.
Road Rash 2 - CHAINS, wheelies and being forcible dislodged from high-powered motorcycles, travelling at crazy speeds!
Super Mario World - lots to do, memorable bosses, and lots of secret paths to explore and uncover.
Splatterhouse 2 - The game is really easy to get into, has not been surpassed since, for the rawness and non-compromising attitude to the way it chose to present itself; has a wonderful soundtrack and is just so much fun to play.
Unreal Tournament - DAMN. You want to shoot. THIS is how you shoot.
Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun. - What is this thing? It has so many different elements, but again, it’s brilliantly playable, lengthy and uses a different approach to most other RPGs.
Streets of Rage 2. You play it, and you’ll understand. The music is great, those attacks look like they hurt. Playability shines through every pore, but the completionist in me would rather buy the full TRILOGY.
Dr. Franken. - He’s a monster in a charming action-puzzler who’s girlfriend’s fallen to pieces on him. He chases round the castle trying to put her together again.
Wario’s Woods - addictive as all H.E twin
hockey sticks, you’re Toad, in trees shuffling blocks about to make ‘em match. Sometimes easy, but then you’re always watching that time bar, for the arrival of the party pooper Wario.
Mutant League Football - Nicely stylised characters, funny comments and a different take on the sport of Football.
Street Fighter Alhpa 3 - Third Strike may be more technical, but Alpha 3 is far more fun, with a broader range of characters, and better visuals.
f-Zero X. Crazy cast of characters, blindingly fast racing, and the random track creator meant the chaos never had to stop (even if even the game AI couldn’t get round some of the delightfully dangerous courses the game compiled, at times)

Shenmue Dreamcast was the first game to hook me and not allow me to leave until it was finished.
Runner-Up FFX reintroduced rpgs to me with the voice acting and 3d environments.
Personally dont think it’s the best game by a longshot, but had me playing for hours on end online dial up was Phantasy Star Online. You couldn’t pay me enough to take those hundreds of hours back.
