Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Mark Rein (vice president of Epic Games) praised the inclusion of Blu-ray in the PS3, saying that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 may get more maps due to the extra storage space. He also gives us an insight of what the future holds. Here’s what he had to say…
“We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version… Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom.”
“If you think down the road, well, maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make.”
I love the new look of the site. Clean, crisp, and clear!
Anyway, the PS3 has a lot of qualities that will make it shine, and the extra storage space afforded by Blu-ray is a massive advantage. This will also benefit PS3 developed rpg games that have full speech and isnt limited by the smaller size of DVD discs.

Epic are making UT3 really hard to resist, there’s a tonne of value to all the content they’re including before you even consider all the extra fan-made content. It’s been a while since I bought a twitch shooter like UT3, this will be the one to take me back in.

I agree with the view that the site looks better now. This text window though…why is the text in light grey, so there’s little contrast to the white background? People will ruin their eyes trying to proof-read what they’re typing.
I’m using Firefox, incidentally. But, yeah, great site and the return of Unreal Tournament can’t arrive quickly enough!

Thats true, one hell of a luxury the PS3 has is Blu-Ray. Here’s hoping it will prove itself useful in the future much more! Really looking forward to Unreal Tournament 3, and looks like the PS3 is the console to own it on!
Loving the new look for the site too by the way! Nice work chaps!

+I haven’t played an unreal game since the first one and was trying to get only rpgs and action/adventure titles like usual minus Killzone 2, but everytime Epic says something, they make me want to get UT3 more and more. So for me i’m only getting three shooters; Half-life Orange Box, Killzone 2, and UT3/ Thanks Epic! And the new site looks very sleek!

The time has come, PS3 is flexing it muscles. I think you have to be pretty foolish to actually believe DVD9 will last for this 8 year console generation.
Sony’s Blu-Ray drive is finally being justified to gamers (it’s always been justified to me).
Comment by Mark Gillespie — Aug 15, 2007 @ 6:50 pm
Mark Gillespie, you write some strange things. Are you trying to say that the 360 and Wii need something more than Blu-Ray to last this “8 year console generation”.
That’s clearly rubbish. Sony opted to give this “legroom” to developers to throw in the extra little bits that make it special. PGR4 may not have the extra nicities that it could have had, but the game is being made and the console is lasting as you put it.
By providing extra content through xbox live and providing more disk room, Microsoft have provided all the consumer and the publisher needs. It also saved itself the pain of siding with either of the next generation formats.
Yes the PS3 has the advantage here, and well done to it! But its hardly flexing it’s muscles, its just been stated that the 360 may have a few less maps. Maps that will probably come out on live. You really do come over as a fanboy, the PS3 version of an xbot! A psbot, a pissbot?
But at least it’s been justified to you, we can all sleep well tonight thank god!

I’m not a fan of these online multiplayer games, so I’ll be passing on this one.
What I’m holding out for are (singleplayer) games on the PS3 that look better than their Xbox 360 counterparts. Hopefully, the Unreal 3 middleware has been tweaked to enable developers to deliver that for me.

Great, this game is indeed looking spectacular. The PS3 version of UT3 is definently the better version to buy compared to the 360. Mod/map support, extra maps from Epic for PS3 version, keyboard and mouse support, oh and isn’t the PS3 version the lead platform now? Or they are at least optimizing the game specifically for the PS3.
@Shibble
Why would you come to a official/semioffical PS3 fan site and accuse someone of being a PS3 fanboy? Of course they are a ps3 fan! Why do you think they are here in the first place? Oh and stay on topic, ok? Thanks.

Sorry Rob, i don’t remember you being the owner of this site so that means i can go off onto whatever topic i choose. Freedom of speech!
I accused him of being a fanboy because he clearly is, and this site appeared to be open to discussion for all platforms, judging by other comments! But seeing as this site is shaping up to be what other people have predicted it would then there is obviously no place for me to be here. I’m more than happy to leave a site that fanboys are willing to ruin once more.

The problem people dont seem to realise about Microsoft and its ‘extra content’ is that its coming at a cost. Fair enough, those costs are little (£2-£5 depending on what it is, sometimes lucky to get it free) but added ontop of a £50 game, its alot.
Thats where the advantage of Blu-ray comes in. Why should we have to pay for downloadable content, when we have a format that can put all these extras on, without incuring any extra cost? There is no reason.
And im not being a ‘fanboy’ about it, its just a fact. Why should we have to pay for downloadable content, when it can be there on a disc?

@Mark: Do you honestly think we won’t see the next iteration of Playstation within 4-5 years. The PS3 might have a 10 year life cycle but all that means is that Sony won’t pull a Microsoft and drop it once the next gen lands.
@Shibble: You demean one person calling them a fanboy, but surely the irony isn’t wasted that you yourself show signs of fanboism. You may not agree with Mark(I don’t either) but have the maturity not plaster him a fanboy over one post. Furthermore freedeom of speech does not apply in this situation. The site is privately run and therefore it is within the right of TheeSpeech to control what is posted. Read the blurb up top the language is fairly well selected.
On a separate topic could we get the names of the people who are actually posting and not this Threespeech rubbish, it makes the site sound like a shadowy organisation.

RFoM is 17 gig, more than twice what a dual layered dvd can hold, Blue ray can hold 50 to 60 gig I believe. So they are already appreciating the “legroom” and in the future games will use more and more space hopefully maxing it out with lots of gaming goodness. I personally think that there will be a new Xbox far sooner than a new PS partially do to to disk media limitations.
Only the future will tell.
