CVG have reported on the progress of WipEout HD, the up and coming PSN game. We have been keeping an eye on this one since it was first announced a while back, so it’s good to hear more news on the game.
Last time we checked out the game it was looking amazing, but apparently even more improvements have been made, with CVG reporting that textures and lighting have been greatly improved.
After seeing how well the PSP versions of WipEout turned out it is probably safe to say that Wipeout HD is going to be one of best uses of the PSN this year.

Any word on soundtracks?
Comment by JohnSketch — Jan 22, 2008 @ 3:08 pm
good point JohnSketch, lets have a Super Stardust style “own MP3’s option” as well as a good set of stock beats. Thinking about it, if they make sure it’s as good as Super Stardust in a few other directions (playability, updates, menu speed) it can’t go far wrong

I love WipEout Pulse but my hands don’t. If the controls are set up properly this should be stunning. L2/R2 for analogue airbraking, oh yes please.

meh, probably not getting released in PAL like Everyday shooter

I’ve never understood the facination with the WipeOut series. Other driving games yes, but this one just does not click with me.

Looking sweet,
I wonder if they’re going to implement any of the ace customisation options from pulse…

Yes, this will be awesome!

No word on release right? It was meant to be out before the end of last year, with the “full next gen” installment this year. wheres that gone?
Comment by Terry — Jan 22, 2008 @ 5:35 pm
@Savage
Think of it like this -
WipeOut is to racing games what Pink Floyd was to music:
A state of mind induced by pretty colours and sensory overload causing deep relaxation and mentle calm whilst filling your brain with Endorphins.
Eugh…you can’t tell I’ve just played Wipeout can you…
Comment by JohnSketch — Jan 22, 2008 @ 5:37 pm
How about a release update of some sort?……screens are nice and all but some kind of idea of when this will show up would be cool as the last ‘estimates’ have now come and gone.
Comment by Andy — Jan 22, 2008 @ 6:56 pm
Pleeeeease let there be split screen; oh wait, I forgot, this is “next gen”, so hardly any games (racing games anyway) have a split screen option and so are practically worthless when friends come round. I remember the days of the PS1 era where to play wipeout with friends we needed to buy 2 consoles, 2 tvs and then connect them with a link cable. Oh how times have changed…

@carl
shouldn’t we get this first in europe (for a change) as it’s being developed in the UK?

Yeah forgot to mention earlier wipeout made games cool, it got them in nightclubs and generally did away with the image it has gotten itself. I think we owe a lot of where the industry is now to Wipeout.
Comment by Terry — Jan 22, 2008 @ 8:07 pm
@13 Geoff - yes, long gone are those days when a friend had to bring their console over and we had to get the spare tv from the bedroom, grud bless next gen games.
oh and when they do split screen it’s on stuff like Resistance and Warhawk, SERIOUSLY GUYS!! c’mon. nothing like roaming an empty map looking for your mate, how about some bots plz.
the reason ps2 games rocked was the sofa sharing two player modes, online multiplayer is not the be-all and end-all. especially with all those idiotic f–ktard kids spoiling it for everyone, who’s buying these brats consoles??
veers back on topic. does this wipeout still have that awful shoulder airbrake malarky that i detested soo much?
Comment by mobiletone — Jan 22, 2008 @ 10:18 pm
Actually, I don’t complain about warhawk’s split screen to be fair, because it is a _fantastic_ drop in/drop out online mode, however _every last one_ of the dedicated servers does not offer split screen for some bizarre reason. Thankfully there’s a big enough community for there to always be enough split screen games in warhawk (usually anyway).
But I mean come on, motorstorm would be awesome with split screen, so would wipeout; and there’s no split screen in GT5:Prologue and I really hope that it’s put into the final game. Come on lazy devs, the PS1 could handle split screen (btw crash team racing is greatest game of all time split screen - battle mode FTW)
I’m also annoyed at the lack of bots in these next gen games. Bots have been pretty much a staple in fps split screen mode; I first noticed in area-51 for ps2 that there were NO bots at all. Playing just with 2 players in a huge map. Yay. I don’t think I’ve played a better split-screen fps since timesplitters 2 tbh.
Okay rant over. Wipeout is looking awesome by the way and if it has split screen against ai opponents I better retract my statements quick

@14 If the other UK developed PSN products are anything to go by the US and Japan will see them MONTHS before we do.

@Geoff
Totally agree, bots are sorely missing from multiplayer gaming these days. (I mean ’social’ gaming, rather than online.) I remember the bot config options in Perfect Dark - they made a split-screen session last days, rather than mere hours. And yes, Timesplitters 2 was the last great game of that ilk… which is why Haze can’t come soon enough!
I hope WipEout HD has split-screen, but I fear that it will follow Burnout Paradise’s lead in that respect…

WipeOut HD is made up of racing tracks and songs from Fusion, Pure and Pulse, I believe.
So, it’s a rehash in HD, basically.
And since it’s a PSN game, I sincerely hope that Sony will not charge people an arm and a leg for it.
Imagine if it came out as a £5 download? Wouldn’t that be something?
Will Sony be generous to it’s fans…?
Comment by Zed Zee — Jan 23, 2008 @ 4:04 pm
The sound tracks shouldn’t be a problem.
Pulse lets you add up to 30 of your own MP3’s.
Pure and Pulse bring it all back in perfect style.
The AI, weapons, look and feel are all there just waiting to be rendered in Beautiful blittering 1080p!
Oh, man…
I am really looking forward to this game.
