Gaming videos: fame and fortune awaits!
There’s a video revolution hitting the internet, and expert gamers are at the very epicentre, earning themselves attention, credibility and even job offers.
The very best thumb-bandits have long enjoyed showing off their skills through video clips posted online, but a new wave of creative editors and joypad-wielding experts are turning idle boasts into a true cinematic artform.
Popular gamers like Killzonemaniac, SolarKhan and EclipsejpX began making game videos for fun, but soon discovered a passion for editing.
Killzonemaniac told us: “What drove me to start making videos was my love for Killzone. I wanted to show that it is an epic game, and one that can match up to Halo.
“That soon changed though, and now I’m constantly putting more pressure on myself to make better quality videos, using professional tools from Adobe and Sony.
There’s a lot of respect among most video creators, although there’s also rivalry to see who can make the best video.”
But there’s more to creating clips than simple competition or rivalries. There’s the chance for worldwide exposure, and a job in the industry.
Ash Kalia is a producer at Gamer TV, one of Europe’s largest broadcasters covering games exclusively. He thinks gamers have a good chance of exposure to the industry with well-crafted material, but has a few words of caution:
“As long as the footage looks good, you could use it in an interesting way, but the main issue is getting clearance from the games companies.
“At Gamer TV we have licensing agreements for all games footage, some of these have restrictions on use, and those have to apply to any footage used.”
It’s far from easy, but Ash says there’s room for gamers to get serious exposure through videos.
“We’ve used YouTube to find some of the best goals from football games in the past,” he explained. “But you’d be amazed how many people don’t even post their stuff online. We opened the floodgates by asking viewers to send us their best goals, and some of the spectacular gamers really got attention from it.”
With exposure like that on your side, there’s the opportunity of bagging a job in the testing, marketing or even development of a game. The lesson learnt: Don’t be shy. Video your gaming, get it online, and get noticed.

Is that when Killzonemaniac realised that it doesn’t?
