Over on the BBC Technology ‘dot.life’ blog, correspondent Darren Waters has some intriguing info on a yet to be announced top secret game due for release in 2009.
He claims to have been shown a trailer for a game not out until 2009, and sworn to “absolute secrecy”. Even Phil Harrison wasn’t sure whether to admit its existence when Darren mentioned it to him at GDC. “I don’t mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is “in game”, as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion”.
We also were recently shown some early work on a game due for a circa 2009/2010 release. Very intriguing it looked too.
Let the speculation begin…
i think they should get the games out that were due last year before starting all this nonsense.

Hmm well I remember then saying a while back that some footage was in game and it all turned out to be pre-rendered. Maybe now Phil Harrison has quit he might spill the beans…
Comment by Terry — Feb 25, 2008 @ 6:38 pm
i think it’s a given really that games released 2-3-5 years from now are going to look better than what’s out now.
just look at what the PS2 is capable of now compared to it’s first releases.
waiting? i do that, i only got RR7 last friday

hmmm…lets stare into my crystal ball(s)…
it seems to show that it’s probably got something to do with ‘heavy rain’ (if that is the title?) …judging from the original trailer, and if Fahrenheit/indigo prophecy are anything to go by, i can see the aspect of ‘extra’ immersion/storytelling…

i think we’re talking about “heavy rain” here
Comment by bedrik — Feb 25, 2008 @ 7:30 pm
Guys, it cant be Heavy Rain because we already know about that… its public knowledge. Think about it, if Phil Harrison wasn’t sure if he should admit its existence when the journo mentioned it then its gotta be something we’ve not heard of at all.

It is Team Ico’s new game for the PS3. It will be set in the same universe as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Comment by Nom — Feb 26, 2008 @ 7:58 am
Doubtful it would be a Team Ico game, seems to suggest that one of the UK Sony studios is working on it. I reckon new IP too.
Either that or a new Rick Dangerous!

A UK studio, pushing the storytelling element of games to a new level, that we know are working on something but not sure what…I’m calling the new Ninja Theory game.

If the BBC man was shown the title under NDA he shouldn’t even be talking about it at all. He’s actually not doing Sony any favours by giving us more things to look forward to on the PS3. As if we weren’t waiting on enough games; hardware add-ons and firmware updates already! And this secret game is out in 2009 you say? A year from now? 18 months?
Too much focus on what’s coming next tarnishes the enjoyment of what’s available at the current time.
Comment by reakt — Feb 26, 2008 @ 9:32 am
@18.
Agreed. I’m more interested in what’s coming over the next few weeks*/months than what’s coming next year.
*I wish it was Socom.

@ Ton Capone:
I thought it was going to cost £229.99?
I mean really, who the hell cares. Sony should be worried about getting games that were promised last year out first (like Haze and UT3 - only just being released now - months after the PC version), before we can worry about what’s not even been announced yet!
Let’s NOT forget that RockStar publicly admitted that the reason for the WHOLE delay of GTA-IV was because they had ‘technical challenges’ with the PS3 version.
Over & Out.

Hmm, there is a Sony game rumoured to be renamed from Eight Days, to something new in March and due out in October ‘08. It is being developed by a London Studio and is supposed to have a better animation system than Uncharted.

Could be a contender.
