We’ve got the new Resistance 2 teaser and it looks like long-suffering Nathan Hale has only got 19 hours to live. The game looks great though, so every cloud has a silver lining…

Deep breath, I think I’ll wait for some time before I look at this too deeply. We’ve got to wear out so many other titles AND see some of it working as a game! resistance 1 was cool for a launch title, it’s a good franchise.
Comment by MrJimmy — Apr 14, 2008 @ 1:11 pm
firstly tats humongeous pun intended
secondly i wanna hope its gonna be 19 hours long but i think the fact he says “this is how it begins” means therell be a third game and given that sequels are a safe way to go…
regardless this looks great! and great to see nathans point of view from now! cant wait!

I feel insomniac is wasting their time and talents working on what is nothing more than another first person shooter. The first one was very generic and about the only thing that made it “special” was the fact that it was a launch game and so it got a lot of sales and attention.
This time around, unless they blow everyone away by actually approaching the first person formula with the jack hammer it so deservedly needs, smash it all up and rebuild it into something completely new and unique (think Metroid Prime) then I fear that they have already been trumped even before launching the game.
In fact I feel that Resistance 2 will come out and quickly drown in the bleak sea of the million shooters.
Insomniac, like Naughty Dog, is a very talented SONY second party studio and I hate to see their talents wasted making something so generic when they could just as easily have done like Naughty Dog. They could have taken their once in a decade chance for creating a new franchise and said to themselves, “why not do something completely new and unique, like Uncharted”?
I don’t have much love for shooters I admit, I see all the games of that type out now and see a sad pile of wasted potential that was snuffed in order to make another iteration of the same game based on the archaic Quake formula.
But when someone as talented as Insomniac wastes their chance like that it is just that much more painful to watch. At least the other two western SONY second parties avoided the same pitfall. Naughty Dog is out with uncharted which was fantastic and Sucker Punch is working on Infamous which looks very interesting.
Alas, I don’t think I will be picking up Resistance 2 and if I do then I will only do so very reluctantly. I only bought the first one because there really was nothing else interesting out at launch but now the situation is very different.
The first one was also a disappointment for me because somehow I had expected Insomniac to abandon the FPS formula and try and breath some much needed life into it, instead they stuck to it pretty closely.

While I get what you are saying Kamiboy, I like a GOOD single player or multiplayer FPS and as I’m sure you realise so do a lot of people. I personally don’t like the ‘realism’ war style stuff, I like a good sci-fi plot which Resistance 1 did deliver on. Yes there are others, I’m still playing Orange Box for the single player and UTIII for the multi player, the stakes are getting raised by Haze, Killzone 2 etc. but there will now be a permanent thirst for the latest in FPS’s, like it or not.
Comment by MrJimmy — Apr 14, 2008 @ 2:08 pm
@Either that or we petition them for a Ratchet and Clank: Eat Lead - FPS with our favourite duo dowsing the worlds they adfventure on with blood and spare parts!
Comment by JohnSketch — Apr 14, 2008 @ 2:32 pm
loved the first one despite the low grade textures at points, but as a whole it was a very solid package that ran on a great story line and had enough variation to keep me interested.
gonna be interesting to see what they do with R2.
also some numptie deleted all the replays from the GT5 servers, and tomorrow the whole lot gets reset, timetrial records, drifts etc. so it’s back to square one people, time to fight for your placements in the rankings again.
*laments loss of being 4th*
*smiles at excuse to play even more GT5:P*

Its Looking good but you can tell its made on the ratchet and clank engine, not that is a bad thing
Comment by Greg — Apr 14, 2008 @ 3:35 pm
ah the ratchet and clank engine. Just don’t spin Nathan around too fast - you’ll get dizzy!
Comment by reakt — Apr 14, 2008 @ 3:40 pm
I don’t know, although the graphics are a bit bland in today’s terms, I think the original was a solid title that deserved a sequel.
It was the first console game (afaik) to offer 40 player online and some of the weapons were very original and the mix of human weapons and alien weapons worked well I thought. It also had a strong and coherent story that made you want to finish the single player campaign, and the alternate time line idea has since been copied in other games.
I think they have enough to build on to make a very good FPS game. I will certainly be buying it on the strength of the first game…
In general I would like to see more next gen shooters adopt the “full body” approach to the design, i.e. you can look down and see your characters body and see their legs and arms on the screen when they’re running etc. With the power of next gen consoles there isn’t really an excuse for playing as a severed head and pair of hands…

Hmmm If i want to play a shitty FPS this year between all the other GOOD games I will pick this up.
Comment by sarge mat — Apr 14, 2008 @ 4:07 pm
I thought the original Resistance was a decent game. Certainly more fun than many others.
Online, Resistance is still the best example on PS3. Whether you like the game or not, the online features are second to none - with squads, mute options AND better comms clarity than ANY other game on PS3. In terms of features, even the mighty CoD4 doesn’t compare to the original Resistance - which is more damning for developers than anything else.
Comment by Paranoimia — Apr 14, 2008 @ 4:22 pm
resistance is still the best multiplayer fps experience on any platform (32 players +),Resistance 2 can only improve on this.
Comment by andy — Apr 14, 2008 @ 4:53 pm
I have to agree with Kamiboy, at least from the single player perspective. It is good and fairly sold as a first title, but in the grader scheme of FPSes it’s average. Fight your way to next check-point, DO NOT deviate from path. With the release of Assassins Creed and Uncharted I think game developer have to push the game play possibilities are hell of a lot more. Sure it won’t be easy, but then everyone has to suffer for their art.

The water is SO Ratchet & Clank!
Is it just me, or does Hale sound like a young David Carradine?
(Kung Fu, Kill Bill etc.)

I think as this is a third gen game for Insomniac, R2 will be something special.
Comment by Obli — Apr 14, 2008 @ 10:54 pm
I reckon Hale sounds a bit like Damian Lewis (aka Winters from Band of Brothers).
Looks tasty, this. Unfortunately, I won’t have time to play it because I plan to be knee-deep in Fallout 3 by the time it’s released

I’m currently playing through the first resistance and i have to say that they are going to have to do something pretty special to this franchise to make this game worth coughing up 40 quid for. Hopefully they’re not planning on throwing us another contrived storyline with horrendous voice acting, comically unimaginative stereotypical silent/macho protagonists, a sickeningly brown hue like having beige lenses stitched over your eyeballs, arduous predictable waves of yawn inducing enemies, completely unlinked objectives and story fragments that jump you from one mission to the next without any explanation as to why or how you got there in the first place, often resulting in you trying to remember if you actually had witnessed a conclusion to your last mission. Most of all, the overall impression that the whole thing was cooked up by two 14 year boys who were having a sleep over and drew the entire blueprints out with crayons and felt pens. This game has started out it’s life as a sub-mediocre entrance into an already stretched genre, in fact the only reason it managed to sell would be because of the lack of titles for the ps3 at the moment. Had this been released on the pc for instance, it would have vanished almost instantly and probably have started out retailing for £12.99. I wont discount it yet though, i’ll let give them some credit and put the first one down to a practice shot. Lets hope those two 14 year boys have grown up, and bought themselves some nice pens.

Being a relatively new comer to the PS3 I have to say I’m quite enjoying R:FOM, especially the online which I’d say is on a par with anything I’ve played on the X360, if not better seeing it’s free! I never trust these videos however, as too many times the video looks smooth and cool, only for the game to be shite! I’ll wait till I see some proper in-game footage before making my “WOW!!!” statement. I’ve no doubt that it’ll be a decent FPS though……

They look good enough to be CG in fact…
This teaser, it almost looks like in game footage, but a little like CG downgraded to look a bit like in game footage.
They did this with Killzone2, i thought they’d be over it by now (unless that is all in engine and i am wrong - if so i apologise)…be good if they’d stop with the ‘target footage’ as it’s not going to convert the hardcore…and ICO team game however, that would convince me to sell my kidney and pay Ken the origional asking price for one..

If you look over @ the US blog, http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/04/14/resistance-2-it-begins/, you’ll see that the Insomniac guy totally sidesteps the “is it CGI or is it in-game footage” questions, which I think is a clear indication that it is indeed CGI. If I was an Insomniac developer and it looked like that and it was real-time/in-game, I’d be singing that from the damn roof tops, with a mega phone.

@25: he didn’t reply to many other questions. I personally think it’s ingame.
Time will tell.
