Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run was the game that introduced us to The Rock as Alex Decker. An attempt to bring Spy Hunter back into the gaming world with its 3D reinvention and movie tie-in (still yet to be seen), The Rock took on the role of Alex through both outings, merging the movie and gaming world in quite a big way.
Simply put, in this game Alex IS The Rock, as he looks like him, talks like him and has all his movements thanks to motion capture technology (mo-cap).
“That was a great experience,” says the lovable Dwayne. “I had my stunt double there with me too, he’s also my cousin who I’ve known for years, so he’s familiar with my physical style of fighting. We put together a whole bunch of great moves, and we had lots of fun trying to inject humour, which I thought the character and the game should have, which was great.”
“You put on this special outfit that had hundreds of these little lights on everywhere. You looked like a walking Christmas Tree! Then every movement is recorded…how you move, squat, run, jump, throw a punch, how you fall. It’s all really incredible,” he continues. “Every movement that you see in the videogame was created by me in this outfit. It was basically like shooting a movie, but instead of being captured on film, it was captured by a computer.”
Alex’s arrival was part of an ongoing videogame to film trend that saw the release of games like John Woo’s Stranglehold and Vin Diesel’s The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, showing the benefits of mo-cap in the game world. Nowadays, more and more games (that don’t involve famous celebrities creating avatars of themselves) use mo-cap technology to give their characters more lifelike movements etc, giving gamers an even more immersive and realistic experience.
But even though Alex didn’t whet everyone’s gaming appetite and the movie tie-in has been rather slow in its release (it’s expected to hit cinema screens next year - isn’t that a bit late to be classed as a tie-in I ask myself?), I’m sure we can expect more movie/game collaborations in the future. The thing is though, are they wanted, or would gamers prefer Hollywood to leave them well alone?

GTA3 as a movie - no lines for the lead actor LMAO!

Loved spyhunter - was a fantastically fun and riveting play with an increasing difficulty level and requiring reflexes of steal!
….talking about the original btw….
I’m still curious as to when - if EVER! - the spyhunter film will ever be released that this game was based on!
First instance of a game being released before the movie is even completed that i have ever heard of!

This blog is a waste - there’s real news that it should be reporting, like another delay of Home, rather than irrelevant drivel like this. You_should_not_only_publish_news_that_will_be_popular!

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of Alex Decker. Or, in fact, Spy Hunter. Does he actually hunt spies?
In answer to TS’s question - given Hollywood’s (and specifically Uwe Boll’s) prior form, I’d suggest they steer well clear.

Guys, I chose Alex Decker as an example of mocap playing a bigger role in games and looking at how many stars like to use it as another vehicle in being a ’super mega star etc etc ‘, but that having a star, or using the tech, doesn’t straight out make a game great.
I was hoping to hear what you thought about the rise of movie/film tie-ins - or they could even be called ‘mergers’ - and if you thought they’d be a good idea.
Gotta say I agree with rooee - reckon the movie could be quite pants… :-s
