SCE boss Kaz Hirai announced that Sony will launch a movie download service for the PS3 in the US this summer. Japan and Europe will get the service at later dates. More news on the service is expected next month - widely presumed to mean that an announcement will be made at E3. Read more at Eurogamer.

I have a movie download service for PS3 already, It’s an attached PC with a torrent client..
Comment by Mr Jimmy — Jun 26, 2008 @ 3:11 pm
@2 lol nice one.
My 40Gig can’t take that much I’m afraid, I’ll probably upgrade later when the movie service comes to europe.
Comment by ThreeSpeechlover — Jun 26, 2008 @ 3:16 pm
Super … Now all what we should get is PSN STORES FOR THE EUROPEAN REST OF EUROPE. COME ON SCEE, I”M SICK OF YOU INCOMPETENCE. Deploy a common english store for the countries where there isn’t a PSN store and let us buy the goodies. We have a single European market for God’s sake, act like it …
Comment by CsMisi — Jun 26, 2008 @ 3:57 pm
I’m tired of SCEE.
Comment by NAZAR — Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:21 pm
Is SCEE also responsible for the delay in introducing the Dual Shock 3 here ? Because it is still not out, even though it has been out SINCE LAST YEAR in Japan.
Why ? The thing is compatible with EVERY PS3 in the world, so why can’t it get released here ?
No, I’m not importing.
Comment by DoggySpew — Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:48 pm
Ignore the first guy, we want it this year. We know it’s possible to, Apple have already done it.
Comment by davidc14 — Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:51 pm
LOL Europe will get it whenever we can be bothered, we havent even bothered to give them the dualshock 3 yet, we have just dumped the entire worlds stock of unwanted sixaxis on europe, those idiots will buy any old rubbish and we can charge at least twice what we could get away with charging anyone else
We cant even be bothered giving them a blog and we can barely be bothered to give them any content for their store
SCEE SUCK. They HATE EUROPE!!!! THEY HATE US THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! IT IS BIZZARRE!!!
Comment by witsend — Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:55 pm
DoggySpew, your decision not to import “DualShock 3″ means that you agree with the policy of SCEE.
Comment by NAZAR — Jun 26, 2008 @ 4:58 pm
Another “announcement”. Be nice to actually see some of this stuff for real instead of more promises. Home, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, Play TV, In game XMB, PSN cards, all just one big prick tease really.
Comment by Matt — Jun 26, 2008 @ 5:27 pm
Oh yeah, forgot about the Dualshock 3. Sonylol.
Comment by Matt — Jun 26, 2008 @ 5:29 pm
according the test schedule,
the movie download service will be tested using the home-beta plan,
meaning the EU wil be able to download movies which are available today, using the PS3,around 2015..
SCEE Thanx you for your money
Comment by terrortime — Jun 26, 2008 @ 5:32 pm
entropay gives us the power to invest money in the SCEA and @ the same time kicks SCEE in the nuts
Comment by terrortime — Jun 26, 2008 @ 5:35 pm
Threespeech, arn’t you embarrassed to report this? After all the criticism Europeans have given Sony over previous raw deals, Sony kicks Europeans in the nuts YET AGAIN…
It’s beyond belief, it really is….
Comment by Mark — Jun 26, 2008 @ 5:38 pm
and will be delayed till 2018
Kaz Hirai get back in your office and concentrate on stuff that gamers wanted months ago.
1/ in-game xmb (2.40)
2/ Home
3/ Dualshock 3 controllers
Also EU gamers are sick to the back teeth of playing second fiddle to Japan and North America.
Just letting you know in case you’ve had your head in the ground for the past 2 months.
Comment by anthonyp — Jun 26, 2008 @ 6:52 pm
I doubt SCEE will ever do anything for us, if we do get it, it will be a stripped down version of what the US gets.
Comment by FeloniousTub — Jun 26, 2008 @ 7:14 pm
and just how will this service be better than the ‘movies on demand’ i get from my current box under the tv? PlayTV i can understand as something worth having, but for a few quid i can buy an exrental film from blockbusters, not load up my HD and have something pretty on my shelf.
at the end of the day you pay money and have nothing physical to show for it. much like downloadable games.
on a happy note Bad Company limited edition got dispatched from amazon this afternoon!!
Comment by mobiletone — Jun 26, 2008 @ 7:35 pm
We get lousy backwards compatibility, no dualshock, lame store updates, delayed store updates, expensive games and expensive consoles… only thing we have that america doesn’t is PlayTV…. and that was meant to be out in like, March or something…
Comment by cube — Jun 26, 2008 @ 7:57 pm
DOWN WITH THREESPEECH AND SCEE. Can you believe Sony fired Paul (the guy that used to tun threespeech) for asking to many questions about the store. He agreed with me that Sony treatment of Europe was disgusting and was trying from the inside to get some answers. They fired him!!!
Comment by carl — Jun 26, 2008 @ 8:03 pm
Agree Carl,
i still remember the big master of SONY WORLD WIDE!!!! Phil H shouting
“EU is the most important Continent”
on 23-3-2007
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/europe-is-most-important-continent-says-harrison
and where is our Phil now???
we generate the biggest income for SO-NOT-EE
and the new Phil prob never even visited the EU
Comment by T3rrortime — Jun 26, 2008 @ 8:29 pm
I can see it now. Japan gets masses of anime titles and Hollywood blockbusters on their store. The US gets most of the Hollywood blockbusters, with classic action films to bulk out each week.
The UK gets one silent movie every month or so.
Comment by iapetus — Jun 26, 2008 @ 8:39 pm
Some Pain… little gain.
FYI:
DualShock®3 controller at the end of July:
Or buy now from a UK retailer with stock available:
So what if the European Store update is just a re-hash of stuff available in other regions in the last few weeks.
Who bought their PS3 console to play PSN games? Hands-up now. Come on… you at the back? No? Exactly.
Buy “Battlefield: Bad Company” &/or “Robert Ludlam’s The Bourne Conspiracy” &/or “Kung Fu Panda”, then spend the weekend constructively instead of moaning again.
I’ve almost won all the Trophies in “Pain” (including last week’s update set). Anybody collected them all yet?

guess i just say this in advance..***** *** sony..
i hate annaouncements like this.. they just pisses me off when the show stuff you´ll probley never get..
Comment by mikkelito — Jun 26, 2008 @ 10:06 pm
cube, you have PlayTV. We don’t have it. We are those who don’t live in UK. We even should not read this blog, because it’s “UK only”.
Comment by NAZAR — Jun 26, 2008 @ 11:48 pm
Man you euro’s whine alot! just suck it up Each market, US, Asia, and Europe are different. there’s all kinds of translation issues with games that need to be addressed before a game can be release to a territory. as for home, noone has it so shut up. and the Dualshocks… do what all us americans did, import, it’ll still work! but for F***s sake don’t whine about it.
Comment by FunksoulBrother — Jun 27, 2008 @ 4:33 am
Not one of these comments is positive, hopefully that should send a message to SCEE that we just are not happy.
EU want’s better treatment, EU generates more revenue for Sony than NA and yet we are treated like 2nd rate consumers.
It stinks in my opinion.
Comment by anthonyp — Jun 27, 2008 @ 6:48 am
@3
If your HD is too small do what I do, use TVERSITY (google it) and set up a home media system to watch films on your PC wirelessly via the PS3 on your TV. It works fantastically (for me) with no lag and I hightly recommend it. Plus it’s free!!!
Comment by Robothamster — Jun 27, 2008 @ 8:06 am
Whine whine whine. Well, if you’re all gonna complain, who am I to argue? Wipeout is indeed late. Someone else is getting a movie download service before us, though like others, I have found an alternative source (but unlike many, I do make a bluray purchase if the flic was any good! DVD is dead for me now!) Any news on the DRM that will be included on these downloaded films? Can I copy them off my PS3 to an alternative digital storage device, to free up what is bound to be a dwindling HDD capacity? What sort of exclusive releases can we expect from Sony? Music festivals or concerts not available on other media?
And just to add my own weight to the DualShock argument. WTF? Sony Europe are certainly doing a good job of narking everybody. Well, not everybody, because some people aren’t interested in exploring what the rest of the world is getting, and so know no differently. Shame on them.
On a more positive note, I finally thumped my cash down, and purchased a Sony 40×3000, giving my poor 32″CRT to my bro. I nearly pooped when I saw what I have been missing. Those without HD screens, I don’t think you quite realise how special your gaming and movie watching can be!
And finally, to finish off, may I remind you that it’s Friday. Woo Hoo!
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jun 27, 2008 @ 9:35 am
@25: Maybe you ought to go visit the weekly PSN release thread over at the US Playstation blog - you’ll get a true masterclass in whining there, I can guarantee. And what exactly are these translation issues that need to be addressed for a UK release of a game that’s already out in the US?
Comment by iapetus — Jun 27, 2008 @ 6:32 pm
This venture is doomed to failure.
It will be grossly mis-managed, too expensive and will also be impractical and undoubtedly delayed.
You have lost your fanbase Playstation.
All is lost.
Comment by Ton Capone — Jun 27, 2008 @ 8:41 pm
On the GameIndustry.biz site:
“Sony confirms PlayStation 3 to get download movie service”
—
“…The service will be a direct rival to Micro$o£t’s service over Xb0x L!ve, which currently boasts movies and TV content from a host of partners including MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount and National Geographic, amongst others…
As a further sign of Sony’s commitment to networked products, this November Sony Pictures Entertainment will offer Will Smith movie Hancock to all internet connected Bravia LCD TVs in the US before it’s available on DVD.”
—
Given the reviews that “Hancock” is getting, this may not be a good selling point!
Or maybe this is the Cheese to go with all the whining?

@30 [Ton]:
I’m still a fan… regular ‘Store updates or not.
I bought my PS3 console to play Blu-ray based games upon. The free (and low priced) extras available from the ‘Store are a very welcome bonus, but without them there is plenty to keep my interest (as there was on the original PlayStation & the PS2).
I also do not understand why you have so much hatred towards the Sony console, the Sony brand in general, and people’s hairstyles…
[ http://www.mcvuk.com/news/29443/Reeves-PlayStation-Network-has-surprised-us ]
If you are seriously not impressed, then sell your PS3 (and any Blu-ray titles you may have bought). If you are unhappy with a service then yes, I agree with you, complaining loudly, and frequently, may get results, but you have got to a stage now where anything released does not suit you.
What genre of games do you (wish to) play? If the PS3 never has or never will offer the type(s) of game you wish to play why continue owning one?
Sell up & move on.
BFN,
fp.

PS. In case you have not seen the reports published online already, SCEE have announced (on 27 June 2008) that the “DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller will be available for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) in Europe on July 2, 2008”:
—
David Reeves, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, commented, “We are delighted to confirm that DUALSHOCK 3 will be released in SCEE territories in early July. We hope this will add to the intense gaming experience for our fans, as we continue to evolve PS3, its software and its peripherals.”
