SCEE have sent us some good news about new PS3 hardware. Click through for the official press release.
E3, LOS ANGELES, Calif., July 16, 2008 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) held its E3 media reception this evening at the Viceroy Hotel, Santa Monica, with David Reeves, President of SCEE, providing a European perspective on the announcements made at the Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) press conference yesterday.
Launching on 27th August 2008 throughout the PAL territories (shortly after in Russia), the new PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) 80GB model will become the mainstay of the company’s hardware line-up. The 80GB model will retail for €399 (£299), and will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage to accommodate more games, movies, graphics, music, photos and other entertainment content – all for the same price.
As with its predecessor, the new 80GB model will be a complete entertainment system comprising the highest quality games and films on Blu-ray™, as well as the ability to download exclusive content, play games online and access the internet at any time through an integrated Wi-Fi connection. The multi-functionality of the 80GB PS3, combined with an incredible number of exclusive first and third-party titles, as well as PLAYSTATION®Network, makes PS3 a comprehensive entertainment value designed to appeal to a wide range of consumers from hard-core gamers to general entertainment enthusiasts.
“We have been listening to our customers and are pleased to be able to answer one of their key requests”, said David Reeves, President, SCEE. “There is more downloadable content than ever before, with the emphasis moving towards user generated content, something clearly seen this week in LittleBigPlanet™. When you add this to the already compelling entertainment offering on PS3, where you can store games, music, videos and pictures, the extra storage becomes invaluable.”
David Reeves also confirmed the introduction to the PAL territories of the Platinum range for PS3, launching on 1st August, at a price of €29.99, including numerous blockbuster first and third party titles, such as Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Assassin’s Creed.
David Reeves also confirmed that new bundles would be introduced throughout the SCEE territories on both PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2, but would vary by territory, continuing the successful policy of providing local content for local markets.

Still no PS2 backward compatibility… and still not a large enough capacity to cope with all the great PlatyStation Network/Store titles coming up & the countless mandatory hard drive data installations of 4-5Gb each, as well as the increased demands on onboard storage due to the future hook-ups with TV programme downloads.
Pity this wasn’t out last Christmas… as those with 40Gb or 60Gb machines will just wait for the 160Gb &/or 250Gb models to be available next August…

“PlatyStation” being a trademarked term meaning “hopeless typist” (with emphasis on the “pist” element), obviously
PS. The 80Gb model has a bundled DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller (in Europe).

What? i think people with 40gb/60gb would just buy a new hard drive? don’t you?

No you haven’t Reeves. There’s no BC. That was what people wanted, the same 80GB BC model as the US. It’s probably for the video service but Reeves announced that won’t be coming to PAL regions this year anyway. Yes, no video service for PAL regions until 2009. Why hasn’t Threespeech posted this? What a sad joke Sony are this gen. Announcing everything under the sun and then failing to deliver. Will we see any of those new PSN games this year? Still waiting on Wipeout HD.

Nope… I think people who bought into the technology at 425 GBP in March 2007, will be looking for a second machine in 12 months time, if not sooner.
Or is that just me?

One title does not equal a general movement towards user generated content.

I can’t understand why people are so concerned with having only a 40, 60 or 80 GB HDD in their PS3. I’ve had my 60GB since launch, own 12 games and still have 15GB of freespace.
You don’t void the warranty by changing the HDD and if you are really after bigger capacity, Saverstore are selling at the moment Toshiba 320GB Sata 2.5″ drive for under £55. That should keep everyone happy surely?

@7 theres also unreal iii, echochrome, but then again 3 titles also doesn’t really equal a general movement towards user generated content either….
Scanned the article quickly dont think it mentioned also bundled with a newfangled “rumbling controller”
what will they think of next??

I’d like to find out just out of curiosity, how many 60gb owners (like me) use the BC facility on their machine? Since I got the PS3, I’ve only played one PS2 game which was Tomb Raider Anniversary and that’s because I got the game the same time as the PS3. Since I completed that, I’ve not touched it (BC that is). My wife plays Lucinda Green’s Equestrian Challenge using BC, but it really wouldn’t affect us if we’d bring out the PS2 everytime she wanted to play it as it’s not like it’s everyday.
I don’t think it’s as important as people seem to think it is now and surely people would rather have a cheaper console to play PS3 games than a more expensive one just to play the odd PS2 game? Especially as PS2s are dirt cheap anyway and for the few that do consider it important, could just as easily buy a PS2 for the extra cost they would have spent on a PS3 with the function.
So I agree with Mr Reeves, more PS3 owners (or potential PS3 owners) would rather have a larger hard drive than BC. But as I said, I’d like to know the figures… How about another poll TS called “How often do you use Backward Compatability on your 60GB PS3?”
Comment by Dave Vincent — Jul 17, 2008 @ 12:49 pm
@ 12 - About a year ago I played GOW 2 and Okami as my PS2 died just before they come out…since then I’ve not used the backwards compatability at all.
The only thing that really interests me with BC is hoping PS1 titles like Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid come to the PSN.

I’ve got a 60GB PS3 and NEVER used BC so far.
Saying that though I do want to play through MGS3 after finishing MGS4 and not playing it before so will be glad that I can after buying it off ebay or wherever.
Comment by Robothamster — Jul 17, 2008 @ 3:31 pm
@ Robothamster MGS3 doesn’t work with BC,
only a certain version number did work, a mate of mine had to contact Konami to track it down, but a patch has broke even that version…
I’m talking about Subsistence, the orignal Snake Eater think it’s the same boat, only certain version number (did) work…
(Note, the camera in Subsistence is far better & also has option of the original camera)

*original
also I was talking about PAL versions

@ Mr Monkey,
Thanks for letting me know, save myself a few pennies than and won’t bother!
Comment by Robothamster — Jul 18, 2008 @ 1:00 pm
Sony can launch what ever they want. Even a PS3 with 10 Terra bytes HDD. As long as they don’t bring back BC, I won’t buy it. As a matter of fact, since BC is gone, I already bought an XBOX 360, which is cheaper and has better games. Goodbuy SONY! Thanks for all those wonderfull games, but sorry it’s no way to treat customers like that.
