After seeing a modder’s successful attempt (see above) at cramming the full PS3 hardware inside a custom made laptop style enclosure earlier this week, we were thinking about the practicality of such a device. Would people be interested in this, or is it just another novelty gag? It certainly is an impressive feat of engineering, and while obviously at its current phase it wouldn’t be practical at all; we can’t help but think with some further engineering, could this work? This latest modification isn’t the first of its type - Ben Heck (well known for his modding of consoles in the tech world) did exactly the same earlier this year, then gave up his device for a charity auction on Ebay via Engadget.
Back in the days of the PSOne, an official Sony screen was available for the mini version of the console - but with the PSP bracing the modern age, is there any need to take the handheld’s big brother out of the home?
Considering the main box looks bigger than the PS3 itself? Not impressive or practical

Not bad,
But the 360 “laptop” last year was far more impressive.

Looks fugly & screens tiny, well done, time well spent…
You’ll be kicking yourself when a slim PS3 comes out…

this attempt looks like a right hash job.
“It certainly is an impressive feat of engineering”
SERIOUSLY ThreeSpeech!? c’mon now.
Ben Hecks version IS impressive.
this above version is just a ps3 dropped in a biscuit tin
with a couple of hinges and a screen bolted to it.
he would have been better off using a SFF case for starters.
FAIL!

here’s a video to my homebuild ps3 case/screen mod.
smaller and sexier i must say

I think the laptop article from last weeks internet is very “practical” - to bury the PSN Update thread off the front page!
Oh Threespeech! Dont ever change!
Comment by someguy — Aug 14, 2008 @ 6:16 pm
Quick! Bury the PSN update again! Put anything up, just bury the update!
Try as you might TS, you can hide it but it still smells.
Comment by Shrui — Aug 14, 2008 @ 6:24 pm
@ Terry - yeah, not easy trying to film and use a joypad at the same time.
@ Mr Monkey - uncanny isn’t it

Pathetic!
i could do better with a hammer and a bit of 2×4!
Comment by manley — Aug 14, 2008 @ 11:09 pm
As pathetic as the update this month.
What’s up TS, still not going to make sony comment on the continous crap they feed to Europe in comparison to the US? Haven’t you been promising us this feedback for a year now?
Comment by Mike — Aug 15, 2008 @ 7:06 am
Tack! Hardly portable is it? It would be more portable to carry around a flat-screen LCD monitor and the PS3 in its original form. Does that thing even have a battery or does it have to be plugged into the mains?
Comment by reakt — Aug 15, 2008 @ 8:12 am
@ JohnSketch - heh, this video was made in ‘the time before Sketch’ i gave the ps2/screen combo to my sister, who promptly fubar’d it. i was not a happy bunny
bl00dy students!!
ps3 on a 7″ screen though FTW!

What would really impress me is the PS3 Solid Eye like the one in MGS4…
Comment by Terry — Aug 15, 2008 @ 8:49 am
I was more impressed with Mr Heckendorn’s one-handed controller…

Comment by novcze — Aug 15, 2008 @ 8:17 pm
i’d rather buy a corkscrew and give myself a lobotomy than buy this ps3 laptop crap
Comment by squid — Aug 16, 2008 @ 1:26 pm
Although it’s called a *lap*top, it would probably break your legs if you put it on them.
