Here’s a new PS3 TV spot. PlayStation has got a great heritage when it comes to creative advertising. What are your thoughts on this one? Interesting to see echoes of the Resistance 2 cover art…

Looks pretty neat
And on a similiar note doesn any was else find the xbox 360 adds a little freaky if not a little gory? They kinda freak me out when the head spins round :S

Personally, I think it’s weak. It’s too esoteric, too short and is void of any coherent content.
I mean, what’s it actually trying to sell? Why would a stranger off the street want to buy?
Furthermore, it possesses very little pathos in comparison to, say, the new Gears of War ad for the 360 (no head spinning involved).
If you’re selling the PS3, list some features. If you’re selling a game - sell the story and the imagery; not a kid with a bin liner gormlessly staring into the sky.

What a disappointment. Are there supposed to be PS3’s floating in the sky that the guy is looking at?
Makes no sense and when Joe Public finds out that the machine is STILL £299 they won’t be buying.
Good luck, Sony.

The guy watches an exploding car in the air. Look at the bottom left at the beginning of the ad!

@ Jerry
I’m aware of that, but ironicaly; that pityful gesture makes the advert seem even more patheticallly directionless.

PlayStation adverts, hostorically, have nothing to do with the console itself. “The Third Space”, “This Is Living” anyone? Look how far that got PlayStation.
:rolleyesalot:

i think it’s quite good, gives a taster into how far gaming has come in terms of technology and graphics

It’s pretty straight-forward. Sony knows that Christmas is coming up. Sony knows that this is the time of the year when non-gamers buy game-related gifts for gamers. This only happens (successfully) when the gamers tell the non-gamers what games they are interested in. So, this is a reminder to start making your wish lists now.
It’s not attempting to get non-PS3 owners interested in the PS3, which is why it needn’t make any reference to the console itself, its features, etc… It’s simply preparing for the holiday season and the subsequent spike in game sales.
For anyone to claim it is anything otherwise, then complain by saying that the ad misses the mark, just wreaks of ignorance and searching for something to complain about.

@ StareClips
Oh, believe me - I don’t have to search.
Even if your rationalism for such a poor advert were the case, it still would not excuse the fact that the ad fails to communicate it’s message logically.
I think it’s ironic to be labelled ignorant due to lack of complacency.

whaaaa????

Very weak advert! It almost makes me wish last years weird plastic gameshow host was back, at least that was more informative!
I thought this years Christmas ads for the 360 were weak and I was hoping Sony would take the opportunity to top them, but congratulations - you’ve made the 360 ads look good!!!!
Where are the shots of the big new releases? Where does it tell you that online is free? Where does it tell you you can download cheap games and free content? Where does it tell you it can upscale DVD’s and play Blu-rays? Where does it tell you it comes with built in Wireless? Where does it tell you it also stores your photos and music? Where does it tell you it can play DivX and link with your PC? Where does it tell you it can link with the PSP?
Seriously that’s one of the weakest and most pointless ads I’ve seen in a long time and marks a new low for SCEE advertising!
An ad for PlayStation should either be informative to it’s features, or show lot’s of eyecandy, or be weird/iconic enough for people to discuss it and consequently learn about PlayStation through word of mouth.
This does none of those things, it’s completely forgettable! SCEE should sack their marketing department, they’re useless…
Here’s an example - I was talking to my boss about plasma screens and mentioned in passing that I use my PS3 to upscale DVD’s - he looked at me as if I had two heads! He thought it was just a blu-ray player not a DVD upscaler, he also didn’t realise online was free or that you could download low priced games instead of buying full titles.
Consequently he happily paid £340 a 160GB PS3 and is now enjoying watching upscaled DVD’s and playing GT Prologue!
This example illustrates my point perfectly - people WILL pay £300 for a console, but only when they are told WHY they are paying £300 for a console.
The 360 almost sells itself now - you see game ads end with “available on Xbox 360″ and you see that it costs £129.99. Now that’s not to say “uninformed” people don’t regret getting the arcade when they hear about what it lacks or what you have to pay extra for, but the point is it sells. They may even go in for the £130 model and come out with the Elite when they’ve talked to the sales guy, but the point is they go with a intention to buy a 360.
People, like my boss, see £299 and think “that’s a bit steep for a games console”, but with just a little bit of basic understanding of what the £299 buys you they are much more receptive. Yet SCEE insist on paying for bland non-descript ads of a guy cleaning an alley and thinking about his Christmas list!
I would count selling 6-7 PS3’s to my friends/family just from telling them a few basic things I do with it, it astounds me SCEE don’t the same…

Well said Apnomis. Personally I just think the Sony marketing department needs firing, yes make adverts arty, but why on earth arent they getting these messages across, and more importantly who okays these terrible ads? The PS3 could be selling much better if the ads actually told us something!
Comment by Russ — Nov 14, 2008 @ 1:06 am
…is this set of advertisements going to culminate with an announcement of a 40Gb PS3 console for £199.99 from the first week of December?
I hope so… otherwise all the (cost of the) TV advertisements for “Mirror’s Edge” & cinema trailers for “Resistance 2” that are promoting the Playstation 3 are going to be wasted as a prospective customer base buys a cheaper console, not because of a global economic downturn and their own concerns over disposable income, but because organisations competing in the same market present the details that everybody understands.
I know marketing is a difficult job, and everybody thinks they can do it better, but please do something different. The second anniversary of the availability of the PS3 has now passed. Try the novel approach of relaying facts to the general public, not artistic presentations that look like something Channel 4 would produce to announce a new series of a soap opera.
Thank you.
I am also waiting for the “LittleBigPlanet” videos on the small screen, or the silver screen, so I do not have to spend any more of my lunch breaks explaining to confused customers in GAME or HMV that it really is a title that everyone will enjoy, not just kids (aged 7+).
BFN,
fp.
