top rental title with little replay value.
Comment by mobiletone — Nov 11, 2008 @ 6:23 pm
A few titles do come along on a regular basis that offer a different take on past ideas; “Mirror’s Edge” is one of these.
I hope it is successful, as the technology could be used for not only leisure time entertainment but for simulation training for armed forces in real combat situations (with mapped environments from enemy territory during times of conflict), or for emergency service personnel to learn how to approach events such as a burning building in order to determine the safest route of entry & exit.
Dismissing this advancement as just a game with a few hours play time is missing the full potential, I think.
But yes, I agree, looking at the brightly-coloured “go this way” architecture of the Playable Demo, I’m not rushing to buy this now. Certainly not for 40 notes.
Pity.

Seems like my point of view is catching.
Let’s see how many other sites take the message & run with it.
Did you see what I did there? Oh, never mind…read on…

Mirror’s Edge: 6 hours.
Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 7:13 pm
News
We reported a few weeks back that we’d heard Mirror’s Edge is only about 5-6 hours in length. Well, now we can confirm that this is indeed the case, with the final PS3 code beaten in just 5 hours. Still, it’s a fun ride, and completing the game on the medium difficulty unlocks another, harder mode, where the red ‘runner vision’ isn’t available and the enemies are much tougher. It’s still a short game whichever way you put it though, so unless it’s got Portal levels of replayability at full price Mirror’s Edge might seem like a lot of money.
We’ll have our full review very soon.

I cant wait. Had a go at TGS08 and played the new demo too and i am excited for the game.
Its just something fresh imo. Who cares if its only 5-7 hours… the same can be said for most other games.

The problem with such a limited game-play duration, Ricky, is that many people who are excited by the prospect of such an unusual take on the first person perspective genre will complete the first run-through in a day or so, and maybe try the harder difficulty mode(s) that are unlocked for the remainder of the first week of release.
When the rumoured exclusive PS3 downloadable content hits the PlayStation Store in early 2009 many of the same audience will either have moved on to something else, or even sold/traded their Blu-ray disc, or even taken their rental title back to the library.
I know the PS3 has a veritable smorgasbord of good, to very good, to even excellent (sweet as well as savoury) titles sandwiched into the last quarter of 2008, but to maximise market presence (i.e. profits when they are particularly needed) the downloadable content should really be brought forward to early to mid-December. I can see the reasoning behind expectations that Santa may well be delivering the game to many good girls & boys on Christmas morning, but I would have thought that a majority of punters have had “Mirror’s Edge” pre-ordered for quite some time. If that same consumer base completes the game in such a relatively short time, then the whole episode of gaming history will be such an anti-climax that the experience will be tarnished & word-of-mouth will turn from lauded praise to critical contempt at having to pay almost forty pounds for the title with no incentives other than a “Time Trial” unlock code for the Playable Demo (from Play[dot]com), or a Fenchurch T-Shirt (from GAME online or in-store).
Then, there are others that will argue that saying such comments within a forum that is read by hundreds, if not thousands of prospective customers will be just as damaging.
If anybody is listening then I would suggest a discounted price for the first week of retail sales, and in-box marketing to promote the downloadable content, or maybe a full price title (as intended) & promotional voucher codes during the first month of sales to unlock new content when it becomes available. Stickers on the front of the cases to advertise that the PS3 version will be superior in the long-term will be helpful for discussion in stores when the usual seasonal visits from the varying fanboys occur (when they traditionally meet up to laugh at the festive offerings of the other consoles).
Discounted prices may well be a double-mirror-edged sword (“…the reason it is cheaper is because it’s not as good…” etc) but those already committed to, and continuing to support Sony, will have a reason to retain the title in their games collection beyond the initial flurry of playing. Retention of interest and anticipation for early 2009 for the exclusive downloadable content will also be promoted.
Also, I’d like to see “Mirror’s Edge 2” demos by mid-to-late Summer 2009, with at least one mid-period Game Pack add-on (at a cost of no more than £4.99, or a comparable price based on industry published currency rate conversion, not the special rates that Sony use) to bring some new levels (not just extending existing game modes).
Oh yes, Santa, please could I also have a satsuma & a brazil nut to go with my socks & shirt this year. No Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, though. Thanks.
Never underestimate the power of PlayStation blogs…

I stuck this on my rental list, very rarely do I buy a brand new IP on launch…
Very disapointed with the PS3 demo tho, as PS3 was the lead platform but the 360 version still looks better (in my opinion) thanks to AA and more contrast in lighting? whats up with that?!
Was looking to buy the title pre-owned for PS3 later down the line due to the exclusive download content, but have a feeling that it will boil down to race modes rather than an expansion of the single player…
Will buy it eventuality (like Dead Space, also in my rental queue) but leaning towards 360 version now…

Well, I played the demo, thought it was good, and pre-ordered. It should be with me tomorrow I think. Then I start to see the rumours of shortness and confusing interior gameplay. Oh bugger. Too late though, it’s now part of my collection. Sod it, it’s nice to have variety. I hope that we can get some new missions, maps, and recreation DLC soon to go with it.
