The lucky, lucky people at IGN have been blasting away on the final code of Killzone 2 (that’s how close it is now y’all) and have completed the whole thing. Fortunately for us they’ve got just enough energy left in their fingers to write up a preview of the game, covering the five elements that are going to make it one of the top games of the year. What are they? Well, you’ll have to read the article to get the full details, but put simply it’s the graphics, the gameplay, the guns, the AI and the multiplayer capability. “put simply it’s the graphics, the gameplay, the guns, the AI and the multiplayer capability”
So in other words pretty much everything about it then?
IGN UK were extremely harsh on Resistance 2 from what I remember, so this is encouraging news that the game will live up to the hype!
IGN: “The constant thud of distant explosions and the whoosh of bullets cutting through the air in Dolby 7.1 is often enough to make you duck for cover, even though you’re playing from the comfort of your living room. ”
I’m also glad to hear that the sound hasn’t played second fiddle to the graphics, I have a pretty decent 7.1 HD Sound setup so it is a big bonus for me when a game has a good surround sound track!

Interesting preview. There is not much they complain about, so we’ll see if a site like IGN, which seems to be very pro Xbox, will review objectively and give it, what seems to be, the high score it deserves.

As a quick suggestion - ThreeSpeech should organise (beforehand or otherwise) for KillZone multiplayer comps like those held for WarHawk.
Would be a hella lotta fun to frag some of you folk

First game to truly challenge the supremacy of CoD4 over every FPS ever released?

*Only* 9 out of 10 in the “PlayStation Official Magazine - UK” (Issue 28 - February 2009) review (pages 88 to 93).
Just like “Resistance 2” scored.
No “Killzone 2” Co-op mode, either out of the box, or planned for future; just like “Resistance 2″… but there are three individual downloadable content packs have already lined-up (unlike the title from Insomniac Games).
No Collector’s Edition either. Just like “Resistance 2” (well, for the European market).
If the Private & Public Beta Trials are an indication of the full build of “Killzone 2”, any other title should just expect at least a month of lag-free (or is that, player-free?) online gaming.
See you on Helghan on 27 February…
Perhaps a ThreeSpeech Clan (of up to 64 of us split across 32 players per online match, and grouped into squads of up to four) can compete for in-game “Valor Points”. Not quite as rewarding as Tesco or Nectar points (no connection to “Haze”, either, thank goodness), but more fun that aiming a shopping trolley at the rebel scum that inhabit the fruit’n’veg section of your local Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) colony.
Oh nuts! Just realised…
27 February… that’s the birthday anniversary of one of my kids. See… I’m a good father; I can remember the dates & everything!
I’m sure he’ll want to play too. He can’t get an online game on “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2″ any more as he beats everyone else! “Far Cry 2” is going the same way too. If only those same people knew he was nearly 8 they’d be even more miffed!
It makes me proud… or jealous… in equal amounts.
If I recall correctly he has ‘baggsied’ second go of “Killzone 2” on the day of release. Ha ha. Like there will be any go beyond mine!
(Now he has his own PS3 console courtesy of Mr Claus last month, I guess that’ll be yet another sale for Guerrilla Games as a title on his birthday present wish list. The fact the title is rated at “18+” is really only there so that us old timers don’t get shown up by the young’uns innit?)
But I don’t begrudge anybody the asking price of this title many times over.
It is — the best — first person shooter title I have ever played, on any platform, ever.
And the added factor of full 1080i support that the beta versions did not offer.
Is it only mid-January? I blame the damn leap second we just had. It’s only making the waiting more unbearable…

fp.

PS. PlayStation in the news again…

“Upshot” of the translated page…
Two gamers on a “PlayStation” unaware of the chaos outside as their on-screen gunfire sparks a full armed police response attacking with scary (but ignored) megaphone instructions.
Ooops.
Never underestimate the power of.. the Copenhagen police farce.

Is the US getting a CE? If they are, I’ll be happy to import. Killzone 2 deserves a CE, it’s disapointing that SCEE cant be arsed putting in the good work to get one, and this holds true for all the big first party releases from last year.
Comment by SinsToJudge — Jan 15, 2009 @ 3:27 am
Fanpages,
US release is 27th, UK & EU is supposed to be the 25th so you’ll get a couple of days practice in over your lad.
Comment by Robothamster — Jan 15, 2009 @ 9:16 am
Our release will be the 27th which is a Friday, its rare games get released on other days unless its some kind of movie / tv tie in or the Friday happens to be a bank holiday.
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Jan 15, 2009 @ 9:48 am
Oh yes, seems you’re right - 27th it will be.
“A few weeks ago, the rumors regarding the European release date for Killzone 2 began to circulate. It may have started with a typo that placed the launch date on February 6, which would’ve been much earlier than North America’s confirmed February 27 date. Furthermore, considering that Guerilla is a European-based studio, and considering the beta hit Europe first, some sources concluded that a February 6 date might not be impossible. However, it was all rumor, and Sony has clarified with several sources - including GOONL!NE - that the game is set to release on February 25 for “Mainland Europe only” and in the UK on February 27, same as the U.S. So yes, Europe does get it a couple of days earlier, but apparently, the UK doesn’t count.”

Off topic, but the Patch for PJ-Eden is out in the Us today, hope it arrives to PALand too…
STILL no PAL trophy patch for Echochrome & the extra thousand user levels :/
Comment by Mr.Monkey — Jan 15, 2009 @ 10:30 am
Waiting is sooo wrong. Perhaps in the meantime, somebody will repatch AgeOfBooty to make it work online again?
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jan 15, 2009 @ 11:58 am
@sins2judge
I would be frankly disgusted if the Us get a CE & we don’t since it’s being published by Scee and developed in a Pal country…
But since Scee is involved that’s probably why there is no CE for any region…
Comment by Mr.Monkey — Jan 15, 2009 @ 12:41 pm
I think the key comments in the article is:
“Guerrilla’s much-hyped shooter promising to blow all other PS3 FPSes out of the water.”
So, ONLY PS3 shooters are surpassed?
Comment by Zed Zee — Jan 15, 2009 @ 1:03 pm
Really looking forward to this, I was gutted I couldn’t get into the beta.. I’d better get back to clocking up 10,000 kills in R2 before it arrives
Comment by marvzilla — Jan 15, 2009 @ 2:25 pm
Hmm, seems they’re only impressed by the enemy AI. IGN mentions that they player’s teammates’ AI is quite likely to stand out in the open getting shot at and constantly needing help.
