SCEE has just sent us some news about the latest version of the System Software - 2.60. Click through for more info…
The PLAYSTATION®3 experience gets even better with the 2.60 System Software Update
Create photo galleries and playlists and relive your video moments
Access PlayStation®Store without an account!
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is pleased to announce the latest upgrade (system software update version 2.60) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). The PS3 experience is about more than just games; it’s also about movies, pictures, music, video and more. This is in part thanks to PlayStation®Network, the online space that opens up a world of new and exciting entertainment offerings. Following on from the success of the last enhancement to the service, version 2.60 is available to download from January 21, 2009 and comes with a host of new features that will give PS3 owners an even better experience.
First is the new Photo Gallery application where you can group photos in various ways including by date and time, by event or by the number of people in the photos – you can even create a playlist that groups expressions (e.g. smiles) or age categories, like adults and children. You can also create a playlist of selected photos and select a photo frame for the playlist, which can also be played with your own music tracks – ideal for saving your family or holiday photos in a way that’s simple to access and easy to enjoy.
But the new features don’t end there: Sony Computer Entertainment have now added the ability to play DivX 3.11 encoded video files – great for reliving some of those hilarious home video moments. Plus, if you’ve always wanted to see what PlayStation®Store has to offer but haven’t yet registered on PlayStation Network, those days are now over. Simply go and take a look at the latest trailers, games demos, exclusive content and loads more at the click of a button, before you decide to create a PlayStation Network account.
PS3 and PlayStation Network are constantly evolving to sit at the heart of your entertainment world as more and more new games, new services and new entertainment experiences arrive. The features in the 2.60 enhancement are well worth experiencing for yourself.
First!

Ok update dosn’t deserve a full 2.6 version number though.

Better DivX compatibility is always welcome….photos not my thing….but being able to access the store without an account slightly confuses me….as you’d need the internet to access the store….and if you had the internet you’d naturally be able to get an ID with little to no effort….
Maybe it’s just me!

-hmm no one needs the psn store guests browsing.
the divx 3.11 update is fine
but where are some great new features/bugfixes like:
-better browser stability (freezes)
-fix the clock/ds3 xmb position screen
-voice chat ingame / voice messages!!
-easier custom soundtracks ingame support
-faster trophiescreen
-add save savegames “more than one file at time”

I’m waiting for updates that will get rid of that stupid information board and replace it with something better. How about themes that are 3D, e.g. a LBP theme with a sackboy running and jumping over all of the icons on the XMB? Sound good?

Some people like to see *what’s on offer* before spending time passing on personal information to create an account.
Richard, it’s not useless, just not what you want, Sony aren’t developing exclusively for you. This isn’t preventing PS2 software emulation development, if infact that’s happening. Evidently Sony are quite capable of working on more than one piece of software at once.
Comment by Shin-Ra — Jan 20, 2009 @ 6:37 pm
I would have preferred some more work on the in-game xmb. How long do they need to look at MS XBL to make a good copy ? Unless Sony have only copied MS’s “Just enough not to be terrible” windows ideas. In which case, stop mucking around with Home and trying to jump a generation of social networking (by mimicking a decade old idea of online socialising) and try proving you can do the “simple” stuff first before anyone will invest time in the “clever” 3d environment.
PS3 is great but I’d be happier with better.
DiVX, that’s for pornos isn’t it ?
Comment by SoliidSnaake — Jan 20, 2009 @ 6:43 pm
@ E-ROLE - yepp, they should junk that info’ board and replace it with a proper RSS reader that WE can add feeds to, not just Sony approved ones either. much more useful.
ps: nice articles lately from you. *hands cookie*
Comment by mobiletone — Jan 20, 2009 @ 6:56 pm
@ Shin-Ra - I agree with Richard, the ability to not have an account and “look” at things on the store is pointless.
Who would do this? Who even suggested this?
How about releasing SF2HDR instead
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Jan 20, 2009 @ 7:38 pm
Wheres the patch that allows the Psp to connect to the Ps3 ad-hoc for internet access, not just remote play… Like a Japanese Psp? (Very useful if you have a wired home network, like me)
Also has anyone tried to download the demo for WipeOut Pulse on the PAL PSN (through Ps3)? It says go to the PC store, you know the one that doesn’t exist anymore…
Comment by Mr.Monkey — Jan 20, 2009 @ 7:42 pm

SCEE on Missing PSN Titles: “We’re doing our best to resolve it.”
By Mark Brown | January 19, 2009
Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness
While the Playstation Store staff try hard to please gamers in every region, Sony’s digital retail sector has received criticism for denying European gamers downloadable titles such as Capcom’s Street Fighter II Remix and the Penny Arcade Episodes.
These downloadable titles are rarely locked to specific regions, but with Sony disallowing prepaid credit card services such as Entropay, purchasing the games can be tough.
We got in contact with developers, publishers and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe to find the reason behind the missing titles.
All the publishers we spoke to echoed the same remark, pointing blame at Sony for the independently run retail hubs in each of the Playstation Store’s regions.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix“Sony’s process for getting titles on PSN varies in North America, Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia”, said Joel De Young, COO of Hothead Games, the Canadian Developers behind Penny Arcade’s episodic RPG. Capcom, when quizzed about Street Fighter’s appearance on the PSN, told us “that’s a question better directed at the console manufacturers themselves”.
The situation isn’t quite as dire as this article might imply; out of the 78 PSN Originals on the American Store, 65 of them have made their way to the European shop. Disregarding obvious American exclusives, such as NFL Score Charts and games based on American TV Shows, only nine games are still exclusive to the US PSN.
The quantity, however, is far outweighed by the quality of the missing games. Q Entrainment’s Lumines Supernova joins Penny Arcade and Street Fighter as much anticipated titles. The full list is as follows:
Cash Guns Chaos
Cuboid
Lumines Supernova
Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode One and Two
PowerUp Forever
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars
Comparing the competition, Microsoft evidently treats the Xbox Live Arcade store as a single global entity, with only a handful of games, ranging from Crossword Puzzles to Spongebob Squarepants games, missing from the Euro line-up.
Penny Arcade, Street Fighter and PowerUp Forever also feature on Xbox Live Arcade, and on Microsoft’s service their European counterparts debuted day and date with the American store.
We asked Sony Europe’s Playstation Network PR manager why the PSN releases differ from Xbox Live Arcade’s global releases, and he told us “this has been an ongoing issue and we’re doing our best to resolve it.”
Whether that means rewriting the list of requirements for upcoming releases, or working with closely with Sony of America and third parties to ensure closer release dates, is unclear, but it’s good to see Sony taking the initiative.
Lumines Supernova
If there’s one phrase that describes the Playstation 3’s online service, it’s “playing catch up”, and the Playstation Store is not immune. Splitting the store into fragmented regions has hurt European gamers week after week when their much anticipated titles fail to show. Hopefully Sony’s resolution bares results.
Fortunately, Hothead enthusiastically told us “Episode One of the Penny Arcade series should be released in Europe in a matter of days” and Battle-Cars is set for Thursday’s update. Capcom disappointingly couldn’t offer the same good news, telling us that “[We] have no updates on HD Remix’s future presence on the [European] PSN store, sorry.”

I don’t have any room for photograph images on my PS3 hard drive. It is too full of the Playable Demos taken from either the PlayStation Store &/or the cover-mounted Blu-ray discs from the “Official PlayStation Magazine - UK” [when I have had to remove Store downloads to make room for more content the following week, only to find that I wish I’d kept the earlier stuff & not deleted it after all].
Yes… I know you have the option to download again because of the “one time fee for use of downloads on up to 5 activated PS3™ systems”, but having the content on a convenient Blu-ray disc I can drop into my machine or anybody else’s, registered PlayStation Network member, guest, or otherwise, is useful to demonstrate the PS3 game catalogue to any party who does not have internet (broadband) access.
However, maybe you will find the demonstration of the PS3 firmware update (2.60) “Photo Gallery” (optional 100Mb installation) useful? It shows how the console is replicating an Apple iPhone/iTouch &/or Mac OS environment…
[ http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/01/20/upcoming-ps3-firmware-v260-update/ ]
As well as downloadable content being aligned across the US & European Stores, I would also like to see the same happen with Blu-ray movie titles that have not yet had a release in the UK.
The trilogy (soon to be four, next year) movies loosely based (or not based at all) on the novels by Robert Ludlum featuring the character Jason Bourne, is a definite must have to show off my Sony HD-TV.
The US market seems to be having a release of The Bourne Trilogy next week (on 27 January)…
[ http://www.amazon.com/Trilogy-Identity-Supremacy-Ultimatum-Blu-ray/dp/B001LPWGE6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1232492464&sr=1-1 ]
The UK? Maybe the same date according to Amazon (UK).
We can but hope.
Taking of ‘a new hope’… other titles in need of a High-Def release…
The Star Wars Trilogies (well, maybe just the first three movies to be released, not the last three, but if we have to have them all just to get the best of the six, that that’s OK)
The Lord of the Rings (not something I would watch, but why is it taking so long? That said, the Extended Editions DVD set is really cheap in the Zavvi sale at present… if you can find a Zavvi store that is either a) open, b) staffed, c) with stock, and/or d) not owned by HMV now)
“Star Trek” Movie Collection (probably not this millennium as the 20 disc DVD set only came out in December 2005)
“Toy Story” & “Toy Story 2”… possibly waiting on another triple set release after “Toy Story 3” hits the cinema (in 2010).
Any “Wallace & Gromit” movies or any Aardman Animation… any? Not all. Just one would do. All would be very welcome. But I’m not greedy. Perhaps a retrospective to mark the sad passing of Tony Hart with a re-re-issue of “The Morph Files” (only this time without Neil Morrissey’s voice-over; the original & best Mr Hart please!).
In a similar mark of respect, how about “The Prisoner” series to celebrate the life of recently departed Patrick McGoohan (aka “Paddy Fitz” & “Joseph Serf”) a week ago (on 13 January 2009). He’s is no longer a number; he is a free man… etc. Perhaps before the re-mark with Christopher Eccleston hits the small screen… no wait, it is now Jim Caviezel as Number Six, & Sir Ian McKellen as Number Two.
However, a slow hand-clap as “Superman - The Movie” should be out on Blu-ray in the UK this week (sorry, I seem to be “into” the deceased actor-thing at present; I used to be into necrophilia until some rotten c… [cough] never mind). The Richard Donner cut of “Superman II” is dedicated to Christopher Reeve anyway, so I’ll wait for that.
The Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer/George Clooney “Batman” movies have only just been released (22 December 2008). All four of these in the “Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997” boxed set (to match the previously re-released DVD set) are not available in the UK until 10 March 2009 though!?!
And the “oddest of odd releases” award goes to the availability of the “Batman Legacy” boxed set that is released the same week with the same four movies on Blu-ray but without the extra content (again to mirror the similarly titled DVD release that was a precursor to the “Anthology” DVD release).
The UK was blessed with “The Matrix/Matrix Reloaded/Matrix Revolutions” (3 disc) Blu-ray set at the end of November 2008, the US was offered “The Ultimate Matrix Collection” (10 discs) mid-October 2008.
But hey… the UK saw “The Dark Knight” on Blu-ray first. The US saw the Limited Edition Collector’s Edition a day later to make up for the delay!
Due to the current economic climate (“Go Obama” – very motivating speech, today, btw, so, OK, “…Stay Obama”), if the remaining “Harry Potter” movies do get made (if Warner Bros. have the cash to spend before all the “child” actors retire), I hope the UK doesn’t get the thin end of the wand with the magical goodies that will fill-up the (I would presume) Collector’s Blu-ray boxed set with hard-backed book set.
Perhaps I’ll just go back to trying to figure out why “only nine games are still exclusive to the US PSN” but then only eight are listed in the article I transposed above.
I think I’ll check my sofa. I’m always finding stuff down the side of there.
Oh look… an official Sony PS3 Remote Control I never use… if only I had some Blu-ray movies I would!

There’s a lot of things Sony could do. In the meantime we’re supposed to think “gosh, they’re busy over there!”.
How about working some interesting things out, likePS2 Emulation (enough power should be available), MKV and OGM support?
As for the PSP, all minor updates after 5.00 were bugfix releases. Haven’t touched a PSP game in more than 6 months, cos they’re releasing nothing but junk on a quite sexy console

I’d like to have seen Voice Messages, better PS3 Browser functionality (cuz it’s something my X360 doesn’t have!) and be able to put my MP3’s into folders of my choice.
Oh, an update that let’s me use the Official Headset with End War without needing to scream my orders in order to be heard would also be nice!

Some interesting extras in that list…

Comment by mobiletone — Jan 21, 2009 @ 12:47 pm
Meh, I’m sure the improved video support will be useful, and the picture thingmy might have uses, but none of the really big gripes have been addressed.
Some of my wishes for future firmware implementation are…
1 - Some new trippy eye candy music visualisations.
2 - Some sort of folder implementation. I HATE having to edit the info on files to get them back into the right groups. I HATE it so much that I simply end up deleting those that don’t immediately work correctly. Don’t mess about, just give us folders damn it.
3 - Improved music playback options so I can scroll through the song, or utilise the shoulder buttons as Zta has mentioned above.
4 - Animated themes, and perhaps animated backgrounds.
5 - Bluetooth file transfer please! (both ways)
6 - Erm, it’s a minor tweak, and in all honesty probably not needed, but I’d like to be able to enqueue songs to the presently playing playlist. Or if none is playing, to start a temporary one off playlist to which further tunes can be enqueued. Some might say it may well be easier just to make a new playlist, but come on, really?
7 - Clock / controller power level conflict issue, it’s got to be so minor that I’m surprised it hasn’t just been done.
8 - Option to install fully owned software to HDD. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m so lazy, that I don’t want to get up off my ass to change games. Thank goodness Warhawk, CrashCommandos, and SavageMoon are installed. I realise that some games will take up a fair chunk of my HDD, but hey, that’s what my fat and chunky HDD purchase was for.
9 - Autodownload of updates, and notification of when available for installation, not the other way around. Look, I’m a man of the playstation generation, I don’t like waiting, and consoles should have the turn on and go attitude that I have come to enjoy. Not turn on and discover I can’t just play.
10 - Friends need expanding a touch to include, not quite friends. I’d like a list of mates that I physically know and are friends with, but I’d also like to add acquaintances that I have met online / ingame. I’m not interested in being updated with the changing status of my acquaintances’, but am of my friends. You know what I mean? Perhaps acquaintances is the wrong term.
Anyway, that’s more than my tuppenth worth.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jan 21, 2009 @ 1:28 pm
Not the biggest or best update - but overall the sums of all it’s parts will add up to a decent update from v1.0…
Comment by BlueGene — Jan 21, 2009 @ 2:51 pm
For me this is the most significant PS3 update in ages - Divx 3.11 support is long overdue and very helpful. For me, the following should be priorities for future updates:
- support for NTSC and PAL across all territories machines: many UK blu-rays have PAL menus but are region free and unfortunately cannot be played on US or Japanese PS3s (see Zaroichi blu-ray)
- support for more media formats: surely it can’t be that hard just to load every variation of every codec under the sun onto the PS3?
I’d dearly love to be able to just use my PS3 for my media watching needs but the lack of the above.

…Firmware 2.50 adds hidden recovery menu
Posted Oct 18th 2008 12:50AM by Andrew Yoon
It appears that firmware 2.50 also added one other feature, meant to help PS3 owners that are trying to troubleshoot their system. A recovery menu [image at the above URL] gives users access to a variety of restore features. It will even allow users to install a new firmware update, should anything go wrong during the installation process. To access the menu, you must hold down the power button to turn on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. Then the menu will show up.
There are a few reports of systems bricking after firmware updates, so this may be Sony’s attempt at creating a fix for future problems. Hopefully, we’ll never have to actually use this feature — but if we do, it may be a quick way of avoiding a trip to the post office to send the PS3 to Sony’s support center….

Yeah, I’d love that too but I think it is unlikely Sony would do this, ditto making it DVD region free. In theory enabling PAL in US and Japanese machines should just be a case of turning a ‘no’ to a ‘yes’ somewhere in the software as I’m guessing the European machines can play both.
Comment by Ali — Jan 22, 2009 @ 12:46 am
@LordOfRuin
I think you’ve highlighted a few good points there! Definately the relocation of the controller charge away from the clock because that’s really annoying!
Auto updates would be good too, the PS3 should knows what games have been played/installed on the system so should be able to to detect if there are updates/patches for these games and automatically download them and install them, instead of wanting to play a game, put it in then finding you have to download a 50MB Patch before you can do anything. And on the back of this, being able to download game data/patches in the background aswell would be good, least you can listen to music or such while it’s doing it.
Also Bluetooth both ways would be very helpful!
in regards the PSP firmware, I would like to see the ability to access your friends list on your PSP and see what games they are playing, PSP or PS3
Also to be able to download files/demos/PSP games onto the PSP via PS3 Wi-Fi and not having to physically connect the PSP to the PS3.
Comment by Flegg — Jan 22, 2009 @ 10:18 am
I gave the Photo Gallery a go last night, and to give them their due it is a really slick interface, and the Grouping options do seem to work really well. I just wish I had more room on the HDD to store photo’s - I’ve already upgraded it once since launch and I’m running out of space again!
It would be really nice if they would release a PC version of this software as it could be quite useful when looking for photo’s to print out…
Comment by Apnomis — Jan 22, 2009 @ 11:45 am
I would like the photo stuff to work on connected DLNA server(s).
But for me the most important thing about this update is that they are starting to add features as programs on the HDD and not in the limited flash ROM. Optional too, although I cannot seem to remove the Photo stuff once downloaded?
So can you get Q~games to release the Earth music player with live clouds, HD textures and a starfield that is real mapping and not patched together from 4 textures thus generating symmetry were there is none. Cannot get my eyes of that when using the PS3 as a music player.
And make it possible to off load > 4gb files for PlayTV stuff.
How about copy to from DLNA servers?
Comment by Icebear4 — Jan 22, 2009 @ 5:40 pm
The photo organiser / presenter is beautiful and totally unexpected! I will get a lot of use out of this as I often browse photos on my PS3. Well done SCE for making a really nice looking and useful app. I think even Apple will be jealous of this one.

Sony: No plans To Bring Back Backwards Compatibility
Posted by A.B. Frasier On Mon Jan 26, 2009
There was this rumor floating around for a while now, that there would be some form of emulation in a update that would enable the PS3’s without backwards compatibility to play PS2 games. I’m not even sure where the rumor started, but we brought it up back up on the recent Co Op Podcast and decided to hit Sony up for some answers. So rather than chop up his words here is a direct quote from the email:
___
Thanks for your email
When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games. I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3. At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3. I think you will agree that the list of 1st party exclusive games for PS3 is growing quickly and the quality of them is great. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, GT5: Prologue and the up-coming Killzone 2 show that we are very serious about bring exciting, innovative and fun games to PS3.
Many thanks
___
Well, that’s one rumor killed. Probably a few dreams caught in the gunfire as well.
