As selected by Sonic himself. What do you think? Are these the best Genesis (or Mega Drive as we call it here) games? Would Dr Robotnik have chosen better? Are there any other game characters that you would like to see releasing collections? What do you think would be in theirs? Questions, questions…

Golden Axe and Streets of Rage are the only games there that interest me =)

@ Sketchy - to be honest that UMD saved my PSP from being traded in. *heart* Phantasy Star games. will probably buy the PS3 version just to rock them on the big screen. (with their enhanced graphics?)

Hmmm… fourth generation titles on a seventh generation console. Form an orderly queue of one around the block.
I’ve seen this advertised on North American sites for a few months as it was released in that region first (on 10 February 2009), with the European version coming this Friday, and an Australasian release six days thereafter.
I guess they just ignored the fact that “Genesis” was not used worldwide to reduce costs in marketing it.
(A bit like when downloadable content costs 6.99 GBP or 6.99 USDs. It just saves time & trees, or something)
Fair play to SEGA for milking the punters for a relatively cheap amount of cash (try PowerPlayDirect to pay under £23) before the “Homebrew” community beats them to it, but not an essential purchase for me, even if the titles are scaled-up to a 720p screen resolution & it is another batch of Trophies to collect.
I avoided these titles first time around as my BBC Micro & MS-DOS PC platform could do better, but my partner informs me that they were worth 6 months pay from am early morning paper ’round at the time.
You can probably buy the best selection on the multiple Plug-and-Play TV games devices that fill up the shelves in Asda at Christmas, or via the Virtual Console on the Wii, or on the dedicated Sega Mega Drive Handheld portable device released last year by Blaze International (and now found in-store in HMV).
The titles on this console are…
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Arrow Flash
Columns III
Crack Down
Decap Attack
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
Ecco The Dolphin
Ecco Jr.
ESWAT
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe
Jewel Master
Kid Chameleon
Shadow Dancer
Shinobi III
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Some versions include “Shinobi III” & “Ristar”, in lieu of “Revenge of Shinobi” & “Sonic Spinball”.
If this new (PS3 & the “other” console) collection floats somebody’s boat then fine, it just stinks & sinks for me.
I guess the PSP releases “Capcom Classics Collection Remixed” & “Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded” will be next for the PS3; probably via the PlayStation Network (where the SEGA compilation should have been released too).
The “…Reloaded” title contains a couple of items some of you may find interesting to catch up on before this Friday…
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting

Mental to release as Genesis since Megadrive was its name in both japan AND europe.
I am a massive retro fan but i feel like i’ve seen these titles too many times in compilations, HD gfx huh? what does that really mean though? Certainly doesn’t mean enhanced.
On the plus side its a lot of retro goodies for little money so i’ll probably buy it
And @ 5, no way was your BBC shifting stuff around as fast as a Megadrive was. I have a few BBC Micro’s and none of them perform like Sega’s 16 bit blackbox …………. imho

If this was on the PS Store i’d probably buy it at some point but I wouldn’t bother with the disk version.

Talking of 60Gb PS3 consoles, ‘tone’… my order of a 500GB 2.5″ internal SATA hard drive unit turned up today so I can finally upgrade my big black dust magnet & stop having to remove installation files from my existing Blu-ray games so that I can download videos from the ‘Store(s) each week.
Wish me luck…

Do you also have the “Activision Hits: Remixed” compilation for your PSP, or the forerunner on the PS2, “Activision Anthology”?
Or maybe the “Midway Arcade Treasures” volumes, or even the “Taito Legends” dual set?
I admire the Companies trying to keep their legacy titles going & introducing them to a new audience on each iteration of the video games consoles, but you’d think there was nothing at all to play developed solely for the current generation.
But there is a market for it.
I bet a number of us here wherever we buy a new device that is capable of playing games end up trying to source the same old “Pac-Man” or “Wolfenstein 3D” titles.
If nobody bought the compilation titles then they’d stop making them [you'd think].

Pre-ordered, gonna play on my street fighter IV fightpad, got Sonic Gems Collection too on G-cube, mainly for Sonic CD, sadly sold my megadrive/mega cd collection last summer
Just waiting for Gunstar Heroes to appear on Psn/Xbl, bought the wii Vc version in all it’s bordered 50hz glory…
If Mario all stars and starwing appear on Wii Vc, might finally get rid of my Snes…
