“Agincourt, Trafalgar, The Battle of Britain…”
These are just a handful of the world-famous battles that the Three Speech Regulars (TSR) are preparing to eclipse in this evening’s ruckus with Killzone 2 developer Guerrilla Games, according to clan leader E-ROLE.
Yep, that’s right. Tonight at 8pm, the maverick Three Speech Regulars will be trying to achieve the unthinkable. I caught up with E-ROLE in the TSR military academy while he was preparing to face the developers at their own game. He seemed confident, “We are all up to the challenge, I know Fanpages, JohnSketch, Apnomis, Reakt, Cartblanche, MobileTone, Pabloamigo and MrMonkey are really good at their game.”
Realising the weight of the task at hand, E-ROLE knows it’s not going to be easy. “We’ll need some of the best players out there if not all of us manage to show up at 8pm”, he muses.
So, It appears that TSR may be recruiting tonight…
“If we win, it will send shivers down the spines of all other clans. Watch out, the TSR are coming!”
Make sure you get in touch with E-ROLE over PSN if you want the chance to play alongside the Three Speech Regulars.
Do it for Three Speech!

Good luck lads, would love to help but [X-8] is my priority
Maybe we can sort out a few friendlies/matches, PSN is the same as my username.

It’s been moved to tonight?! Yey! I’ll be there!
Good article by the way TS, liking the build-up. Now I know how the big Premier League teams feel before a big footy match! lol
BTW I’m the 4th from the left on that photo, the Helgast next to Fanpages (the one facing the right way!)! lol
I leveled up last night as well, so can now create mobile spawn points!
If we’re going down, we’ll go down fighting!

Start your turret fella.
Awesome, I cannot wait for this. Photo came out ok too - would be great to get a proper capture so everyone’s name appeared.
Maybe if we pummel GG they’ll have no choice but to include a record/replay facility as DLC.

@ manley, don’t worry m8, I’ve shot my shadow before now - curses to GG and their realistic shadow renders! LOL
@ E-ROLE, I was thinking the same thing, I think I’ll probably stay quiet, I’ll probably get all starstruck and just mumble something stupid like “I like your game Mr Developer sir, please don’t kill me too much!”
Seriously though, we should give a mini-interview for ThreeSpeech to publish, ask them if there is anything they want to say to the site. We could ask the obvious question about co-op, but that might annoy them and they’ll kill us more! Maybe you could ask them about that photo mode you wanted! lol
You’ve always got the standards like -
Are you pleased with the public reaction to the game given the years of hype you’ve had to go though?
Which element of the game are you most proud of?
Do you have any patches or DLC in the pipe line that you could tell us about, and would it focus purely on multiplayer or is a campaign mode expansion a possibility?
How to you see the Warzone element expanding in the future, do you envisage more ranks and classes being assed or will the focus be purely on new maps?
When do you start work on KillZone 3?!
@ marvzilla, if it is turned on then spectators can watch clan matches.

Comment by Noisepurge — Mar 19, 2009 @ 4:42 pm
BTW, will all game modes be included in this match - including the Bomb the Base missions? I was thinking about it and that is the only thing I can see getting us any points in because you get a point by stopping them blowing your base up - which I think is doable. Let’s face it…
Bodycount - we’re toast
Assassination (defend) - we’re toast
Assassination (attack) - an outside chance, but we’re probably toast
Capture and Hold - we’re toast
Search & Retrieve - we’re toast
Capture & Hold (attack) - we’re toast
Capture & Hold (defend) - we have half a chance
In summary: we’re toast!
But still as long as it’s not a white wash we should be proud! A 1-6 or a 2-5 would be a good result, a 0-7 would be embarrassing!
Who knows, just because they made the game, maybe they’re not that good a playing it! Let’s stay positive - a win would be cool! A giant killing of FA Cup 3rd Round proportions!!!

fanpages and Queen_Victoria will be reporting for duty at 2000 hours.
Our other resident Three Speech Regulars clan member, DragonSlayerT, is on standby if one of our troops has a communication error.
Just have a fun time guys (and gals)… don’t take it too seriously & if all else fails we’ll come second… not a bad thing considering the team we are playing.
More of a concern is that if any members of our upcoming clan match opponents opt for “Spectator Mode” (if non-clan members can do this) they will gain insight into how each of us plays.
Tell you what… let’s pretend we have played a serious match prior to today (instead of just against each other), and scare everybody else into submission
Are we all staying on for an after-match party against/with each other (as I hope will become our usual warm-down procedure)?
Maybe if E-ROLE is free he can set-up a follow-on room (with an optional password; sent to each of us by the PlayStation Network/XrossMediaBar messaging system, if required).
I aim to be more Terminate & Stay Resident than Telford Steam Railway, but with our opposition we may all be The Student Room instead.
Good luck everyone.
For Victory…

@ E-ROLE, next time you challenge them make sure it’s a 16 player match! We have a strong 8 player line up in our clan and we should exploit it! We were all there ready and waiting!
We should get some more midweek matches set up - maybe once a week on a Thursday like this one? We need to earn our Valor back! After 10 clan wins you get a 1,000 valor bonus, after 25 wins it’s an extra 10,000, and after 50 clan wins it’s a MASSIVE 100,000!!!! You also get 3 medals for it too…

Comment by mobiletone — Mar 19, 2009 @ 9:52 pm
I spectatored the whole match because I did not realise it was only 4v4 and not 8v8, but what a frustrating experience! I kept yelling at the screen in a very pantomime way “he’s behind you”. The ability to switch, between cameras and behind players from both sides, is awesome!
The most tense part for me was watching search and retrieve. The TSR guys looked like they had it in the bag, and if the ISA turret hadn’t been busy killing a drone, the GG guy would have had a hard time reaching the drop off point. Unfortunately he hit the drop off point with 1 or 2 seconds to spare and it ended up a draw! I was listening to the GG guys at the time and they were whooping with glee having snatched a draw from defeat in that round.
All in all, a great performance from the TSR guys against some very seasoned GG guys. I actually learned some very good strategies while watching them, which I will share with the team.
Good job guys, you did us all proud, even though it was a loss. Onward and upward!
Comment by CartBlanche — Mar 19, 2009 @ 9:58 pm
@Apnomis - Yes, I agree an 8 on 8 against them would have been better and you’re right we had a strong line-up tonight. Not sure why it was only 4 on 4 in the end (maybe the GG boys only had 4 players that could make it?). Let’s hope we get another chance against them!
Comment by reakt — Mar 19, 2009 @ 10:08 pm
@reakt
4 on 4, that would be why I couldn’t join then.
Am gutted I didn’t get to play, but well done to the lads for putting up what sounds like a solid performance. If we can do this well against the people who made the game,I’m sure we’ll give Robo’s clan a good match on sunday. I should be around for that if it is in the evening.
I’m off to sob into my pillow….sniff, sniff.

I just had the most intense and fun 1v1 match with Apnomis. Great fun and hope more of us can do it again.
Can someone explain how we went from 105 valor to 85 valor in 2 matches!!? When only 5 valor points were put up both time. It doesn’t make sense. We should be back on 100 now, right? Or is that due to the pending matches coming up? If the latter, then that make perfect sense.
I need to be up in 6 hours. l8r!
Comment by CartBlanche — Mar 20, 2009 @ 12:21 am
I just stalked the GG clan page and noticed they actually had another match on, an hour before ours. So their hand/eye was well in the zone by the time they got to us, tonight.
Check out their clan page here.

They have 100% wins so far out of 3 matches. Btw, while spectating our game, the one difference that stands out is that those guys were talking constantly. I didn’t understand anything but “spawnpoint”, but they seemed to be keeping each other updated constantly.

Yes, I wish I could have played with a microphone last night, but not realising that the match was 4 vs. 4, I had a very disappointed family member who couldn’t join sat by me moaning throughout & a younger one chanting parrot-fashion the words to the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon being watched (for the umpteenth time… today) in the background. I didn’t think it fair to subject the rest of our clan to that, so I unplugged my audio input device.
What I did notice as I was playing is that the [GG] clan members (probably, er, obviously) knew all the best vantage points for sniping, the advantageous locations to stand to gain passing opponents heading for specific destinations, & the areas to hide without detection depending on which in-game mode (Assassination, Search & Retrieve, Search & Destroy, Bodycount, and/or Capture & Hold).
First lesson learned: If offered a clan match challenge from an opposing team that is asking for clans with low valor points be wary that they don’t take us by surprise by turning-up with high ranking players kitted out with lots of medals & ribbons!
I’m not keen on the Vasari Hammer map; it is one of my least favourites as I tend to find I’m running around underground trying to find everybody when they are ‘upstairs’ & vice-versa. This was more apparent given the low number of players last night. I usually play as the Helghast too, & the symmetrical walkways & corridors that mirror each faction’s starting locations caused me to turn to the left rather than the right a number of times & had me staring straight at a wall instead of a doorway causing me to miss the target I was pursuing. Another lesson for the ever-increasing list.
But these points are by no means an excuse. The Guerrilla Games players were, unsurprisingly, better at organising themselves on the night as they have probably played together many, many times before.
Our clan, on the other hand, I suggest, needs to meet-up between clan matches to discuss strategies & formulate plans for future events… oh yeah, and just to get some practice co-operating with each other rather than working as individual units. I know we all having differing hours (and days) of game-play & varied commitments across any given week, but with the fact that we hadn’t really played together as a unit before, our performance last night could not really have been any better. Well done!
No criticism is due to any individual player. We all did our best, and that is the most any of us can give. Well, apart from myself. I sucked as the Assassination target!
Sorry again, guys.
Once we have some more positive valor points under the belts of our respective uniforms we should challenge the (other members of the) [GG] clan again to help improve our own game as much as that of our opponents. I think last night we were unlucky so many times that we really should have won a few more of rounds (especially the Search & Retrieve round, like CartBlanche mentioned above).
So, in summary…
4 vs. 4 matches should be avoided or, at least higher team capacities are preferred (as long as we have enough players available for that event).
If possible we should play together more often (between clan matches).
In-game we should keep each other updated on our progress/movement & the location of the other team.
Also, again as a suggestion that I know you’ll offer suitable criticism upon, perhaps we should appoint each member with a task or skill to adopt at a given mode of play.
For example, during Assassination somebody is responsible for shielding the target, or another for being responsible for healing with medical packs when required.
During Search & Destroy or Capture & Hold, somebody should drop a respawn point at the target location & just camp out until the other clan members arrive. Even if it means dying as soon as you arrive because of an existing presence from the other side, dropping a respawn point so everybody else can descend on the location takes priority.
Needless to say, if anybody goes down who has been appointed a task, then a “second” should step-in if they can before the killed member re-appears.
I’ll stop there in case our upcoming clan match visitors are reading… but you get the idea of forming a strategy, I hope.
Mr Monkey (DiscoRab) did a great job of location analysis at our first clan match. I don’t think I ever thanked him for that. Thank you, Mr M.
But in conclusion:
Instead of sounding like a disgruntled grumbling Muttley-like Hanna-Barbera character using all the special symbols on my keyboard to convey my annoyance with my own performance; I hope we can all learn from the experience.
On a positive note, out of all of our clan matches we have only lost to Guerrilla Games
Thanks for setting that up the match, E-ROLE. Very enjoyable.

fp.

It was nothing…..*giggles*…the only reason i survived that was due to the spawn lag time when spawning at a tacticians SP - it takes the user at least a second to take note of where they are default set to spawn and change that. Gives me time to reload!
Then the second you see them fading in just begin unloading a clip - they’ll be invulnerable to bullets for a moment but its reeeeally disorientating spawning and finding yourself underfire!

Great comments everyone, it’s nice to see everyone is enthusiastic about the clan, I know it’s a long shot but I hope we manage to get at least the 10 and 25 wins medals, and enter at least one big tournament (is there any coming up)?
@ fanpages, some good lessons there, it is true that you only become a good clan by working together - I have a mic but I must admit I don’t often use it - I uttered a few explitives last night during our 1 on 1 game but I’m not convinced it’s working right, did you hear me at all?
A tactic I find useful is when you’re in a squad your Squad leader acts as a mobile spawn point. We should get in the habbit of the better (less likely to die a lot) players forming squads of 2 or 3, so the ones that die a lot can get straight back in the action and support the Squad leader.
Being that I’m quite a ‘lone wolf’ player I find I don’t stick to one class - I have a selection of classes/weapons I prefer for each game mode. However, again we need to be more organised about this - for example it doesn’t take 5 Scouts to place spawn points near the enemy base. Similarly the heavy amour and boost abilities of Assault class is useful for capture missions - but again is it a good idea for us all to be boosting about with rocket and grenade launchers? Wouldn’t it be better to have some other support classes like medic and tacticians etc?
I’m not saying we should have fixed classes and stick to them, just try and compliment your squad a bit and trust the other guys to do their bit!
Maybe we should all agree on one time and day we can all do and have a clan only practice room running once a week?
Also get those 12-16 player clan events cued up E-ROLE (use 8 player only if necessary for the other clan), I can’t make the next two as they’re weekend evenings which is the only time I can’t do! Just go though the clan pages and fire off challenges, there’s no need to be too picky lol.
Come on guys, it’s only about half an hour a match, if we get 2-3 clan matches in a week we’ll have that 10 win medal in no time - why not try and cue up a couple of back-to-back matches, most of us still had another game in us after the GG match, so doubling up our schedule is a good way to climb the ranks quickly without needing to arrange two separate times for people to be available for…
BTW could you guys hear GG during the clan match? I’m never sure whether chat is private or not? In the games I play on my own I can still hear people on the other team - is this different for clan matches? Also if you’re in a Squad does that mean only your Squad can hear you? I’m confused how the chat function works?
Comment by Apnomis — Mar 20, 2009 @ 9:51 am
@Apnomis - I would also be up for the clan practise one night a week. Also, actually taking part in clan matches is good practise in itself. The tournament would be a great idea too. One match can be over in no time at all.

Well I didn’t do too bad acording to the replay. Got some good shots in
Comment by E-ROLE — Mar 20, 2009 @ 10:29 am
@Apnomis
My understanding of the chat functionality is this:
When freshly spawned and going around (not in squad) your speech can _ONLY_ be picked up by those around you. This is true for enemies/friends so if you’ve ever played Halo multiplayer - whateves around you can hear you.
Howwever - whilst in a SQUAD, imagine as if you’ve all been handed dedicated walkietalkies - you can hear your squad no matter where you are in position to them. And in addition to this anyone _not_ in your squad friend/foe will still abide by the “hear you at close range”.
Now when you die and are in the grey/menu select/map screen I haven’t quite picked out if you can hear everyone, or just those that are dead at the same point or going around your body, but it doesnt matter cos your dead =).
Hope this helps!

Speaking of which - agree with the comment before - could you hear me alright?
Problem I have is that my bluetooth headset can produce feedback between the ear piece and mic if it’s especially loud, so i pipe all audio out through the speakers and keep the audio in(mic) on.
Unable to verify the quality of my mic though.
Be nice if you could have a bit more control over the sensitivity levels of Attached headsets (via bluetooth) other than 0/1/2 e.t.c. as the _ 1 _ setting i believe is too high and _ 0 _ is a tad useless =)
Not sure if its a software or hardware issue at the PS3 or headset end!

I think I’ll invest in an official headset. Make things alot easier. I could hear you well john, maybe a little hard to hear you when there are alot of explosions. Who’s up for some pre clan match battles. Best practice before Sunday.

Comment by JohnSketch — Mar 20, 2009 @ 12:08 pm
Guys that sounded fun, but would have been better with more players. Oh to have that replay facility from Halo. Then we could have whole battle movies cut to show the action in all it’s amazing (gory) glory.
Doubt there’s enough internal bandwidth on the PS3 to allow that to go on without some sort of quality reduction elsewhere, so I’m quite happy to leave that one. Unless it can be done, in which case GG are probably on the case already.
As for better communication makes better teams, I agree, but I never know what to call the places where I am. “Hey there are some baddies upstairs” hardly helps. “Oh, oh, behind you, oh never mind they got you”.
Also, whenever I form up a squad, I tend to end up with foreign speakers, so I don’t understand what’s being said. Bummer. Wish there was a universal language (English obviously, ha ha!), or a universal translator.
BThomeHub is rubbish unless the PC has had it’s P2P turned off, and the PS3 is wired connection. Otherwise I find it works okay.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Mar 20, 2009 @ 12:36 pm
@LoR/E-ROLE
I’ve heard similar gripes about the home hub.
For clan/practice matches when I’m available I don’t mind hosting. My internet connection is pretty rock solid (cable) and PS3 is wired.
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Mar 20, 2009 @ 1:07 pm
Maybe I’m being over competitive, but I think we should have strategy discussions elsewhere, rather than here, we want to win after all. I’m no tactical expert, but plan to put together a strategy document for KZ2 map, which I will host on my website, but passwords will only be handed out to clan members. This way tactics we learn can be kept in one place with pictures/drawings etc. Also everyone can provide feedback on how the document evolves.
Any thoughts?
Comment by CartBlanche — Mar 20, 2009 @ 1:13 pm
Re Mic : I’ve found that playing with Headphones and using the EyeToy works really really well. The headphones block out any feedback into the mic and I still hear everything going on. I seriously considering buying a pair of proper 5.1 surround sound headphones, but they are £100+ from -

@ Cartblanche, I can never hear anything you say on the mics m8! Don’t know if it’s just me, but I can hear most other people but with you I see the icon to say you’re talking but all I hear is a very quiet static.
I saw that MadCatz have signed a distribution agreement in Europe for some 5.1 gaming headphones that a very popular in the US. Don’t know what price they’d be though.
@ Robothamster I’m a member of AVF too, that’s the type of thing we should try, I just wish it wasn’t a Sunday as it means I can’t play!
@ E-ROLE what’s in the pipeline for next week m8? Any weeknight matches planned? Could we arrange a back-to-back match to get 2 clan games in one sitting to you think?

A very simple Wiki has been set up, login details will be with you shortly.
I’ve added a very very basic layout, but we can discuss layouts and improvements later.

@86 [Robothamster]:
Thanks for the link to the AVForums “Killzone 2″ Tournament… I would have missed it otherwise.
Maybe something our [TSR] clan can discuss courtesy of…
@90 [CartBlanche]:
Thank you for setting up the Wiki. Very useful addition to our clan.
I’m not too keen on being overly serious on game-play; i.e .not apportioning blame or ranting if we lose (like I have heard some clan members do after a match)… it is *just* a game after all (there are far more important issues in the world that losing 5 or 10 valor points), but I would like to at least present some kind of united front, so I am looking forward to meeting-up.
(All): PS. Squads members in-game:
The AVForums [AVF] can have all their members pre-allocated to each of the available Squads so that it a designated Squad Leaders role to invite 3 other players as their game starts.
Organised or what?

Comment by CartBlanche — Mar 20, 2009 @ 9:25 pm
@fanpages : np problem, i hope everyone uses it and gains something from it.
I also would hate it if everyone gets so competitive that abuse is dished out afterwards. For me I’m competitive during the match, but philosophical about what happened afterwards. There is no point getting all blamey about it, and I certainly won’t as I’ll make my fair share of mistakes.
So far everyone on the clan I’ve played with and against has been good humoured about wins as well as losses, which is all good.
If it gets to the point where people aren’t enjoying it, then no one will turn up to the matches and more likely won’t be regulars on here any more either :).

In case anybody (else) is following our progress (or lack of it), we got thrashed in a very big way last night by the PS3 Attitude clan. I don’t think we did anything wrong… communication was good, our two squads worked well together, but the other clan was just better on the night.
However, we (E-ROLE, JohnSketch, CartBlanche & myself) picked up some good tips & tactics playing together after the clan match that we are taking forward for today’s challenge.
I think it demonstrated that the art of winning (or just competing on the same level as our opponents) is practice, practice, practice

Those isometric kz2 maps are awesome! I wish I had found those earlier. I’ve added a few ideas to the scratch pad.
@fanpages : My guess is that team has played before under other PSN accounts, but I could be wrong. Again most were higher ranked than most of us, or at least me :). But I’m probably just making excuses for my poor performance.

Thanks.
I only have the one image like that, but I wish I had the other 7 maps. I believe the Salamun Market image was direct from Guerrilla Games. The image I posted to your site was taken from an article hosted by Kikizo…

As for PS3 Attitude, yes, you may be correct; each individual member may well play in other clans (or even in other clans in other titles, such as “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare”, or similar).
Don’t beat yourself up about our (combined) performance.
We win as a team & we lose as a team, but we also have fun as one as well.
See you later this evening…

All Maps on the wiki now contain 2D layout maps, if anyone fancies familiarising themselves with them.
Until I saw these maps, I actually didn’t even realise there were ammo depots!
Comment by CartBlanche — Mar 22, 2009 @ 8:05 pm
We’ll have to revise our stratagies and take them on again soon. Build up our team skills and get to work on the site, implementing new tactics and ideas. The skratch pad is awesome!
Comment by E-ROLE — Mar 22, 2009 @ 8:06 pm
Scratch/Skratch/Sketch Pad…
…or “The John” as it will come to be known?
Mind you, I’m coming to the conclusion that our clan member “RagingWhisky” should be renamed “Rocket Man”. Mind you, he’s quite handy with the Sniper Rifle too!
When I’m not in a clan match, I often use the Repair ability of the Engineer badge (class), not only to gain a point every time something is fixed, but also to ensure that all the ammo depots & fixed guns belong to my faction so the other side cannot use them.
But… you have to be careful shooting at the ammo depots to destroy those already acquired by the opposing team though, as your bullets can bounce off & kill you outright. (Hence my high suicide count in my statistics!)

Good match tonight - although we won 5-1, Robo’s clan pushed us hard on each challenge. Their air & ground support was pretty good.
Thought we played well as a unit. I’ll have to get a headset - like E-ROLE said before (on the wiki I think) - it’s hard to dish out the health packs when you can’t tell people to stand still!! lol

I believe it was Mr. E-Role ( it wasn’t my apologise for not remembering who it was exactly ) who managed a decent head shot at a crucial moment during the enemy assassination.
Seemed like everyone worked well together and everyone seemed to be supporting everyone else tactically. I think we are all looking forward to the next 8v8 match.
PS. What has happened to Mr. Monkey? He has not been on here for a little while.

@ CartBlanche, I’ll try and check out the Wiki tonight, I’ve picked up a few tips that I could share - playing with strangers can be so annoying - I really need to play in another clan match with a team that knows what they’ve are doing!
@ elephant_stone, that’s a good idea, I wonder if ThreeSpeech would be willing to consider a forum on this site? threespeech.com/clan maybe? Alternatively I am the administrator of a computing and games forum which has a clans section - I could have a word about setting up a private TSR board on there if you want me to?
@ TSR - Congrats on the win, a loss would have killed our stats, but a 50/50 win rate isn’t bad - especially as one of our 4 games was GG!
I’m really beginning to feel that I’m getting the hang of the game now, I’m eager to join you guys in a clan match (let’s hope I can make the next one!). You will also notice that I am now a General as well, so this week I’ll be consentrating on unlocking my secondary abilities. I’m also hoping that I got in the top 10% last week for one of those Honor Rank trophies, going to need to play it a lot this week if I have a hope of getting the top 1% trophy though!
