If you’ve switched on your PS3 in the past 24 hours you will have most probably been greeted with a new firmware update. What makes this update so special is the inclusion of the ability to be able to voice/text chat with your friends during games. Check out the short tutorial video above to find out how to make the most the content within this update.

I notice that you now get an estimated download time when you download things from the store.
Handy little tweak to the firmware that!

@ mrsatansdojo, really? I didn’t spot that (although I’ve not downloaded anything yet!). That is a useful extra.
I’ll reserve judgement on the chat function, I tried it last night while playing KillZone 2 online and during the game it completely locked up (worse than I’ve ever had my PS3 lock up - not even holding the Standby button worked at first). Subsequently I was kicked out of 3 KZ2 games during the next hour (each having a different network error code).
I deleted the active chat rooms from my friends list and things seemed to settle down. Coincidence? I don’t know, but I wasn’t taking any chances!
There was 2 things that really stood out as annoying with the Chat feature for me though -
1) the 33 character limit per line
2) the fact that although you can go straight to the chat by pressing the PS button, you still need to press X to start typing and then O before you press the PS button to exit - if you have a keypad (or keyboard) why do you need to press X and O? You should be able to quickly press the PS button, type your message, press enter, and press the PS button to go back to your game. The requirement to press X and O just slows the process right down and makes it far less spontaneous and detaches you too much from the game you’re jumping in/out of.
At the end of the day, the fact is until cross-game voice chat is added anything Sony include will be critised by some people! They were never going to be on a winner with v2.7 because of the rumours about it being a massive update that added an awful lot of new stuff…

The update actually has a lot more stuff changed underwater, also in AVI playback functionality for example. (errors in certain files were fixed, while a few of those files now play without audio).
It’s just very hard for me (making a video conversion tool for PS3) to get incomplete information on firmware updates, and having to check a lot of stuff every time a new firmware comes out.
Would it be too much to ask to get a complete list of fixes in the firmware, and not just the stuff that is very obvious ?

Still haven’t fixed the stuttering video issue they created with 2.41. Sod text chat, I want to be able to stream videos like I did before.

@cho: do you have stuttering MP4 or m2ts files ? Overhead was increased slightly, and if you’re streaming wireless, that might be the reason for stuttering. Wired, no stuttering should occur.

What about support for Voice Messages? How can Text Chat be a move forward?!? I really don’t understand what Sony are doing, they seem to have lost the plot!
It seems to work out easier for me and my mate to play on the PS3, whilst using a Voice Chat session on our XBox 360s because the quality of communication is better on the RROD machine than the PS3! Not what I forked out £400 for!
I wish I could say that you get what you pay for, I mean PSN is free after all, and it shows! However, the best part of £400 for a console? I’d expect more for money to be honest.
