Shipments in Japan of the new PlayStation 3 video game machines reached a million Tuesday, Sony said, hitting the company’s target about two weeks behind schedule.
Sony Computer Entertainment said in a release that a global shipment of two million reached within about two months after a machine’s launch is the fastest pace for any game console ever put out by the company. (Associated Press)
good for Sony, now get them to remember it’s a game machine and pump out the games for those of us with machines already. Also, PUT SPLIT SCREEN IN MOTORSTORM BEFORE YOU SHIP IT~ saying this because the developers are saying they’ll make the mode if gamers want it and I WANT IT!

While it’s great that yo…er…Sony shipped 1 Million units, the big question is how many have sold through.
NPD data and many industry stories indicate the sell-through numbers aren’t too hot, folks. So the big question is what is Sony going to do to rectify this problem? Or are gamers going to get a rehash of Sony circa-PS2 release where they simply ignored many of the PS2 launch systems?
I just hope Sony remembers that people have a much longer memory than they think.

Sony shipped 1 million units in NA (USA and Canada). NPD reports that Sony had sold 700,000 units at the end of December. Assuming they could have sold some 100,000 in Canada to say the least, the sales figures aren’t bad at all considering very few games have been released so far and that the sales figures are not so up to date as the shipping figures.
In any case though, PS3 (700K) sold more units than 360 (600K) in the US at launch, despite having a higher price tag, more than expected supply issues, less games and far more competition than 360 had last year. We could also argue that it’s a Japanese product VS an American product in the US, which could make it even more difficult to sell well somehow. PS3’s sales are very remarkable when we look at the big picture.
