If you’re wondering where the DivX support for PS3 announced a while back is, you’re not alone. Gizmodo met with the DivX team yesterday to discuss future plans, and those for the PlayStation 3 were brought into the conversation.
“According to the company, they expect the previously announced firmware update to hit the PS3 soon, which will enable full DivX support for the console. Though no specific time frame was given for this upgrade, their particular emphasis on saying it was coming soon leads us to believe it’s ‘coming in a week or two’ soon, as opposed to ‘four months down the road’ soon.”
While there’s still no exact date, at least it looks like it will be sooner rather than later.
Does that also mean a Divx webplayer works? on stage6 divx site?

Sure. I’ll add that to the list of things to wait for along with Haze, Metal Gear, Little Big Planet, and Home.

Sony announced already a firmware update for christmas, with the Blu-Ray profile 1.1. So i guess divx will be included in this update.

this is what i got in an email from the divx guys:-
” We have indeed made a deal with Sony to add DivX video playback to their popular PS3 gaming console.
And that’s all you get for now. While I wish I could answer the most obvious question and tell you exactly when the DivX-laden updates will be released, I can’t. Sorry. I know it’s a little out of character for gamers, but try to be patient. I mean, you could always go play a game while you wait. I hear Mrs. Pac Man is fun … the boards change! Imagine that.”
make of that what you will

Everyday I start the PS3 hopping for a new fw update!

nice move.
even tho it might have negated effects on your movie dep in the bigger picture this could spell good things.
and what else could you do when microsoft just released divx support of their own? those bastards.
just remember to keep it tight with the movies tho
on another note, what is the deal with your head technician being fired or removed? if he was the one that made the ps3 this good he should get promoted. that goes for Ken too. i really like him for what he made you. in retrospect i hope you will see how foolish it might be to remove him. remember, no matter who you are, it doesnt matter how hard you try if nearly everyone on yourus team wants you removed. i know he would not have approved of the 40 GB sku. that, i think, is not the best move. im hoping you are going to phase it out as soon as you can and only sell the full BC sku.
anyways and always, stay strong
Love Kenta

Yeah, cool. Rather annoying that Sony announce it, Microsoft jump up and implement it. Is that right? Did Microsoft just implement it, yeah I think they did. Mmmm! Bugger.
I love my PS3, I really do, but the owner experience is very similar to my Amiga. Great hardware but lack lustre support (sometimes).
Maybe the couple of beers I’ve enjoyed this eve have lead to a lack of patience, but really, is it unexpected? The lack of patience, not the beer. Though it’s Friday night, so who knows.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Dec 15, 2007 @ 3:52 am
Some Xvid and FLV playback would be nice too.
Also, more control of audio/video directories. And fix the problem of occasional MP3 files not being recognized. As well, remove the file limit on playlists - they should be able to add thousands of songs - but only a few hundred is allowed at the moment.
Comment by Joel — Dec 15, 2007 @ 3:57 am
It’ll have to happen next week or not at all. I really don’t see Sony being suicidal enough to release a major firmware update while most of their staff are on holiday.

@10 I agree with you in saying that almost every major firmware update has something to be fixed. That’s why I think that the update will be release AFTER Christmas holidays.
Well, “soon” have been used by SCE in a very strange way in these months. In February SingStar was supposed to be released “soon” and in Italy we are still waiting for it!
Comment by Fabio — Dec 15, 2007 @ 10:39 am
Joel - XviD will be supported. It’s just an open source copy of DivX. My Sony DVD player supports DivX and plays XviD with no problems.
I too check my Google Reader most mornings hoping this update will be out… next week would be great.
Comment by Tom — Dec 15, 2007 @ 12:06 pm
Sorry, that should be ‘most Xvid files will play’ as I understand that some files include unsupported features. I think it’s unlikely that Sony will get full Xvid certification at any point.
Comment by Tom — Dec 15, 2007 @ 12:11 pm
Along with the DivX support I hope for the MKV support as weel, as mostly there is a support for MKV, you just have to rewrite the headers and rename it to mp4 … maybe convert the audio too … So the MKV support it isn’t as a huge leap as the DivX support … so my hope is there … But stil, DivX support is welcomed. And I might make my bets, that there is a imminent PSP Firmware upgrade, I think there is the PS3 firmware too … if I remember correctly the last two major release was almost simultanious with the PSP firmware update … So I think that next thusday is the day when we get firmware 2.10

@11 - yep agree totally - grown up file controls for ALL media types can’t be hard to deliver, it’s a mess at the moment. The other day I had images on PS3, wanted to copy more from a USB stick to a USB harddisc, the ‘Copy’ mixed the images into the single PS3 disc folder - leaving me a right mess

@ Carl & Justin Bailey
Carl - you are just a BLEEP-BLEEP (bleeping by Three Speech’s bleep machine), no other explanation for it. You have no sources, all you ever do is visit this site and complain. If you had sources you would know some inside info and would be content to know what was happening but you don’t, so you aren’t - please BLEEP off!
I for one am loving my PS3 and getting DIVX support is brilliant. Instead of making snide comments (Justin Bailey) why don’t you look forward to it. You want great software, applictions etc but you’re not prepared to wait for them to be perfect so you moan. If it’s released early and it’s not up to standard you moan. When are you ever happy?!
Stop acting like you’re owed something. Think about all the extra things your PS3 can do now compared to when it was first released. I’m looking forward to 08 because I know we’ll see even more cool stuff added with each firmware update.

Divx is a welcome addition to the multimedia capabilities of the PS3.
I just wish they removed the DVD/BR DRM from playing movies on the PS3 for people with SDTV and RGB SCART.

There are a couple of perfectly valid reasons for this not happening before Xmas.
1) As previously mentioned, most staff will be on holidays from this Friday. If the update was to start causing random system lockups, there would be no staff around to debug/fix the issue. Even an update this Thursday would be cutting things fine.
2) Sony probably want to avoid the situation where little Timmy’s first experience of their PS3 on Xmas day is a 100mb system update. Timmy yanks power cord in frustration and bricks the thing. Then there’s a torrent of “Sony ruins Xmas” stories on every internet forum on earth.
After the U.S launch there were heaps of small updates to fix things, but did any of them happen in the week for Christmas?

Cheers to Sony

If you want XVID support, for now just download tversity media center. It can convert any file format (except mkv) to one acceptible by the PS3. No lag noticed and I have used it for the past 5 months
