Released in the US last year Unreal Tournament 3 sees a UK release today. Featuring lightning fast gameplay and stunning visuals thanks to the UT3 engine, Unreal Tournament 3 is definitely one of the best reasons to own a PS3 right now.
The press have had their hands on UT3 for a while now and the reviews look good. Ign and Eurogamer both gave UT3 9/10 and ‘worth playing’ and PSX extreme gave an even higher score of 9.5/10. For more reviews of the game head over to Game Rankings. If you would rather watch a review check out the GameTrailers Video Review.
The story of UT3 involves a race called the Necris invading your character’s world. With them having slaughtered all of your fellow clan members, you set out for revenge. Multiplayer gameplay is by far the most rewarding part of the game, although a single player campaign is included where you battle advanced AI bots across various game modes.
The game features over two dozen weapons for players to try out. Vehicles play an important role in the game and have been upgraded and enhanced for maximum killing potential. The game also features a variety of game modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Warfare mode.
One thing Unreal Tournament has always been noted for is its user generated content in the form of Mods and Maps. We all know what maps are, but Mods are programs that allow game modification ranging from simple view changes to complete alterations. One example of a new map can be found here. It’s entirely made of destructable lego parts.
One of the first Mods available for UT3 on PS3 was the third person view Mod, which changes the players point of view from first to third person. Check it out in this video. It’s also worth noting that the PS3 version of the game also supports all content created for the PC version.
It’s looking good to us. What do you think? Is it on your shopping list this weekend?

Still more curious regarding the apparent single player campaign and what that entails!

I don’t think it’s a campaign like Resistance or COD, I think it’s more like a series of botmatch multiplayers

I’m tempted by this. Apart from the “Gives me something to play on the PS3″ thing, I’m quite tempted by the “Create your own level on the PC and play on PS3″ side of things.
Time to see if my local Tesco are doing the PS2 for £50 deal, if not I feel an impulse buy coming on.

@1 The single player compaign isn’t great, but then ut isn’t about that.
Personally I’ve been completely blow away by the mod support, it’s simply amazing. Check out http://www.ut3mod.com for some of the mods cooked up for the ps3.

The campaign is basically a series of multiplayer matches against bots, interspersed with some rather flashy cut scenes.
In all honesty the single player is much the same as in previous iterations of UT.

According to OPM, the game is distinclty ‘meh’ anyway, and doesn’t compare with or draw you in like CoD4.
Personally, I’m not interested in a single-player ‘campaign’ full of bot matches, or and entirely online ‘twitch’ shooter with no real story.
I had the first Unreal game with my first ever PC, and the single-player was pretty good. I also played UT a few years later, and didn’t think much of it. Why they completely abandoned stories and a decent single-player mode I’ll never know. Lack of imagination, I guess.

Its a big Joke!
I am really annoyed with epic.
I have import the UT3 US Version in December and they cant create a Fix/Patch in 10-11 weeks… all my friends does play now the EU version, and I can not play with them. And what about the Voice Patch? Its a shame! 70$ for nothing

I’m always amused by how the character design for UT3 resembles that of gears ever so slightly

Hi threespeech, many thanks for linking to the lego map mod that i hosted. Its great fun, and shows off the uilt in physics and destructable environments of the game.

Well, apart from a few ‘getting online issues’, i.e. telling me i need to be signed into the playstation network when I was, and the occasional delay between me hitting the fire button and it actually doing it and also the fact that voice comms doesn’t appear to work ( unless i need to do something first ) it’s a bl00dy great laugh. Had some fun TDM’s last night and am looking forward to some Clan nights.
In all honest, the game is very Quake III tournament like but thats fine, the mods etc will make this game. If Epic can just sort out the teething problems I’ll not be moaning.

very tempted by this…
UT2004 was a great blast - good in small doses so if the price is right and servers work well I am sold.
Modding support is great, it adds so much more to a game - hope other developers take this on board. Can you imagine a high-quality mod community for Killzone 2 and Resistance 2!!
Quick hand me Sketchy’s drool bucket.
mmmmmmmmm, cooking the mods!

It’s fun. It’s fast. You need keyboard and mouse for the best control. Graphically unimpressive, though what is there is solid and fast. Yeah, it’s okay, but after all the hype, the wait, and expectation, I’m a little disapointed. I dunno what I was expecting really. A faster brighter madder version of Resistance I suppose. Nowhere near. I think this will live on the mods. As for me, I’ll play it in between Warhawk, Resistance, and Burnout, waiting for Resistance2.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Feb 22, 2008 @ 2:55 pm
Been playing it for a month and its pretty good. The story mode could have been better, i.e. there actually being a story rather than a series of bot matches, but the ability to jump in to a friend’s campaign as a team mate seamlessly mid game and use user generated mods is brilliant. If you get the game get the flatwars map off http://www.ut3mod.com, aside from the xbox360 logo on the telly it’s excellent!

I had a go. Fun, worth a rental but never in a million years will it touch the infinate replayability of Warhawk…

UT3 is out. Wow.
So what!?
Comment by Ton Capone — Feb 22, 2008 @ 3:44 pm
@14
“So What!?” So… people might be interested in it my learned friend, especially seeing as some have already imported and can give a first hand account of the game.
How can you put a negative spin on good games being released? Especially when they are format exclusive (for the time being)!
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Feb 22, 2008 @ 3:58 pm
Really, does anyone care about this late arrival anymore?
Comment by Zed Zee — Feb 22, 2008 @ 4:04 pm
I was lucky enough to get a copy Yesterday (Thursday)
and played it well into the night on-line and off-line.
I am well pleased, i was lucky enough to be at the PC launch in Birmingham in November and had a look at the PS3 version then. since then the graphics have been smoothed out and game play if spot on.
I cant wait to put more hours into it.
Recommended!!!!

Ha, UT3, that’s like so last year dudes
Nice to see the UK finally get the game although I can’t help but think it would have been better to have a global launch.
Still a great game though which I’ve got on PS3 and my Quad Core 6600, 4gb, 8800GTX monster PC. The strange thing is that it runs and looks better on the PS3 and plays surprisingly well with the pad. I remember spending hours on the original UT and this game has moved it’s gameplay style back to being more like the original.
I think this is a great fast action FPS shooter which makes a nice change to COD4. The potential with the inclusion of the mods is really exciting as well. The only downside is the single player campaign which is not that great, but I find the best thing to do is just startup an online game with a handful of bots on and within a short space of time there are usually lots of real people joining.

Buy it lads, it’s good fun.

What’s the situation with UT3. Have we got access to worldwide servers or is it limited to Euro?
If so, is there a patch due?
I like the game, but there’s no-one online!!!

***************************REVIEW*************************
I play the original UT everyday and still do after 2 years so instead of getting this game for my pc I decided it was a good idea to get some ut action on my PS3 in HD.I got this 6 weeks ago, an import from the US.
The game overall is very good and was glad I got it but there are things that annoy that they need to patch and soon because its becoming a drag.
1st problem is that the headsets really do not work, mine just doesnt connect and thousands of other dont either. EPIC say they do but we cant all be wrong surely.
2nd problem and the big one is that user created content connot be downloaded straight from the server you are joining and you have to go to ut3mod.com and download/upload the maps/mods one by one and this just is annoying.
I have played 1 mod map online since I have brought this game and that just is not good enough.
I also have pointed out these flaws to epic themselves on there forum but they never gave PS3 owners an answer, delelted my posts then banned me completely.
I reccomend this game massivly but untill they patch it, UT3 will not be the game that changers online console history forever.

I bought this game yesterday, and was unimpressed at first. On my 50Hz SD CRT TV, the game looks awful. The lack of anti-aliasing (I assume) means jagged edges and the whole screen looks flickery. This goes for other games using the Unreal Engine. It’s not like my TV is bad; other games can look amazing. Ratchet, Burnout, and especially Call of Duty are all gorgeous.
I then took the game to my mate’s where he has a widescreen 42″ 60Hz TV, and it looked amazing. So I have to say that the Unreal Engine does not appear to be optimized with our standard 50Hz displays in mind. Also, the widescreen videos look squashed when playing in 4:3, rather than letter-boxed. It’s pretty lazy really.
And the Ripper weapon has gone! My favourite! But, having said all that, I played Vehicle CTF for hours last night. It’s fantastic.
So all I need now is a “better” TV. Hmph…

@26 Have a look at http://www.ut3mod.com. That site has a lot of the mods that can be used on the PS3. There’s a tutorial section which explains how to import a mod. Note that the folder structure is different for US and EU versions! Here’s a link to the tutorial http://www.ut3mod.com/search/label/TUTORIAL
