The latest PlayStation 3 firmware update is now live, and ready to be downloaded when you turn on your console. In case you didn’t see the press release last week, the update brings Blu-ray Profile 2.0 (a.k.a. BD-LIVE) support, the ability to play DivX files that are over 2GB, and ‘Resume play’ which will allow you to continue playing a Blu-ray disc or DVD at the point it was last stopped – even if the disc has been removed.

nice update for those Blu ray fans…like me!!
Comment by Paul — Mar 25, 2008 @ 2:38 pm
I like the inclusion of subtitle support for Divx files, and the way it mentions it right at the end. You know, as an afterthought.
Comment by cn — Mar 25, 2008 @ 2:40 pm
Ever since the closure of Stage 6 I’ve found little use for divx as of late. Bring back STAGE 6!!
Comment by E-ROLE — Mar 25, 2008 @ 2:59 pm
I noticed the feature “You can now display subtitles in DivX-format video files.” in the list on http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item97773/Update-features-(ver-2-20)/
No mention on how it works, but it looks promising. Tonight I’m testing this right away!!!
Comment by Niels R. — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:00 pm
Yeah I want to know how to display those subtitles. I haven’t had a change to update my PS3 yet so if anyone finds out post some info. Overall great update.
Comment by Thargoth — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:15 pm
Since the PS3 uses the officially licensed DivX software (not just a generic MPEG4 decoder) I would guess the subtitle support is the same as the PC version of the software. That is the subtitles have to be embedded in the file by the DivX tools. I doubt it will play subtitles from an external text file (though that would be nice). So when testing this feature keep this in mind.
The first thing I’m going to test is to see if it now supports MPEG4 video with custom quantization matrices. That is the biggest reason for videos that show up being recognized as DivX, but when attempting to play them it just fails back to the XBM with the file now labeled as “Unsupported Data”.
Comment by NSI — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:28 pm
As a sucker for US TV shows I’m an avid Divx user, and for me this feature is probably the 2nd most important after Blu-ray. I do however still have GT5 Prologue on pre-order
Comment by Lee Richards — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:33 pm
anyone had any problems since updating? Loads of people on ps3fanboy.com are complaing of games freezing when they play online since updating?
Comment by I.AM.IRON.MAN — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:39 pm
Custom quantization on MPEG4-ASP works now
just get cracking on external subs (like srt), Divx/Xvid options QPEL and GMC , the same deblocking/denoising options for DVD to be used with Divx, and AVC High Profile 5.1 support..
Then again, I won’t have time to watch movies when i get my GT5:P anyway
Comment by xtc — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:43 pm
@xtc (comment #8)
You said “just get cracking on external subs”, does this mean that external subs aren’t working?
(Sorry, I’m not a native English speaker…)
Comment by Niels R. — Mar 25, 2008 @ 3:53 pm
@Niels: well.. as mentioned above, you have to mux them into the Divx/Xvid to have them recognized now. (using a tool like http://userxp.tripod.com/sub2divx.htm )
Comment by xtc — Mar 25, 2008 @ 4:10 pm
Don’t worry if it seems to take ages to download.
the update file is 130mb.
Comment by I.AM.IRON.MAN — Mar 25, 2008 @ 4:12 pm
@xtc
Thanks a lot! I’ve also found some app calles AVI-Mux GUI (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/). It doesn’t seem to be 100% stable (I’ve too close it and open it again after every mux), but it works well.
Even MPC recognizes the sub streams instantly!
I really love this. My whole collection of files will be re-muxed!
Cheers all!
Comment by Niels R. — Mar 25, 2008 @ 4:19 pm
@xtc Thank god they sorted custom profiles! That was doing my head in. That should cut out the majority of the ones I have to convert to MP4. Now for AVC Level High@5.1 and MKV container support and I can sit back and enjoy the shows.
Comment by katamari-ball — Mar 25, 2008 @ 5:26 pm
for everyone,with big bandwidth
to convert MKV (the high BR-quality) into a Quality-perfect Mp4

Comment by terrortime — Mar 25, 2008 @ 5:47 pm
@15 Yeah I’ve been using GotSent for quite some time for those tricky MKVs and its good where it gives you the option if the h264 stream isn’t fully Level 4.1 compliant. I think i’d just like MKV and 5.1 support straight out of the bag. Anyway, I’ll stop going on about it and wait and see. Don’t wanna sound like I’m going on like the requests for In-Game XMB!
roll, burn, roll
Comment by katamari-ball — Mar 25, 2008 @ 6:10 pm
Yeah ! Included subtitles and MULTI AUDIO TRACKS works perfectly. SRT files can’t be readed.
I use official DIVX encoder to generate my DIVX files.
Thank you Sony.
Comment by elfronto — Mar 25, 2008 @ 6:30 pm
Honestly, I don’t think we’ll ever see Matroska support on the PS3. The MKV container is just too flexible, and can hold too many different A/V types. Maybe if they give us Vorbis, FLAC, and Theora playback then we’ll see Matroska (and OGG).
Also, I wouldn’t hold my breath for AVC Level 5.1, because the PS3 simply does not have the power to decode nor the ability to display true @5.1 content. What should the system do if it just ignores the 5.1 tag and tries to play something that halfway through ends up requiring a huge decode buffer? Standards are there for a reason. The rippers/encoders have gotten better with their usage of x264 and are producing files which are within the limits of 4.1 (even if they are still tagged 5.1).
Comment by NSI — Mar 25, 2008 @ 6:34 pm
the PS3 doesn’t have the power to decode 5.1? Funniest comment I’ve heard all week.
Played a bluray lately?
Comment by Tony — Mar 25, 2008 @ 7:34 pm
@19 I’m talking about MPEG-4 Part 10, H.264, AVC Level 5.1.
Blu-ray is Level 4.1. Level 5.1 is not used by any consumer level video. It is designed for the “next generation” HD, which people are calling 4K (4096×2304).
Even the Baseline 5.1 can have a video bitrate of 240 Mbit/sec (where Blu-ray is 40 Mbit/sec max).
So, no. The PS3 cannot play AVC Level 5.1, can correctly refuses to try when given a video stream claiming to be of that level.

Cool, I’ve been playing Warhawk (literally) all day and have had no problems. Also, the web browser is noticeably quicker, good stuff!
Comment by lxd — Mar 25, 2008 @ 8:12 pm
My web browser no longer works after downloading this update. It freezes randomly & can’t be closed with the circle button. When trying to close it through the popup menu, the whole console freezes & has to be reset. I hope this can be sorted fairly easily, as the rest of the update is a nice bonus (even if it’s not in-game XMB).
Comment by Lee — Mar 25, 2008 @ 8:16 pm
I would love to use BBC iPlayer.

Forget about my comment #13.
AVI-Mux GUI isn’t working. It just muxes the SRT with the AVI.
DivX seems to use the XSUB format wich is a additional stream with bitmaps. You can use DivXMuxGUI for example…
The AVI-Mux generated AVI’s are working with MPC, but not on the PS3. The XSUB’s arent working in MPC, though.
I’m thinking about combining both so you have a AVI with SRT and XSUB streams. Need to play around and test the files on the PS3 and with MPC.
Comment by Niels R. — Mar 26, 2008 @ 11:43 am
I have had minor crashes in online games since the previous update, and have had one since this update; however nothing major. Web browser is a touch faster, but still rubbish. Faster rubbish isn’t any more appealing than slow rubbish. Yep, I’d also like to be able to play on the BBC iPlayer too.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Mar 26, 2008 @ 12:23 pm
a puny 130MB, not exactly a size to complain about in 2008…
maybe in 1998 but right now is just pathetic.
Comment by mark — Mar 26, 2008 @ 4:05 pm
I use AVIAddXSubs to add subtitles. Easy to use and actually works. No installation required or any extra software. I still hope they add external subtitle files some day.
Comment by Thargoth — Mar 26, 2008 @ 7:32 pm
My ps3 won’t play blu rays properly since this update. I keep getting disc read errors or it freezes up the system. PS1/PS2/DVD discs all work no problem but I can’t play any PS3 games or blu ray movies. It was working perfectly until this update. Is there any news of a patch to fix it or am I going to have to send my console off to sony?
Comment by niallo — Mar 26, 2008 @ 11:11 pm
After this update I can’t play any disks at all - tried PS3 games, PS2 games and DVD’s. After inserting a disc into the PS3 the disc inserted icon appears in the top right part of the screen but I don’t get a disc icon in the Game column.
All downloaded games work ok.
Anyone else had this ?
