LBP is gonna be out of the charts by the time xmas gets here. it’s failing hard. best get those server/moderation issues fixed quickly.
my wish list:
Maestro cards working on the store again.
a real RSS reader for the XMB.
in-game music being unlocked for all titles.
remote play not being a total waste of time.
a global store.
pre-paid cards arriving.
the MM/Sony moderating team put against a wall.
screen shot app’ actually working (not unlocked by devs)
Sony starts listening to us, THE CONSUMER for a change.
there’s probably more but i’m eating my lunch….

Do ads like these really work?
Showing 4 people sitting on a sofa with controllers and then 4 sackboys running across the screen, that sells me a game.
As Nintendo have shown!!
This does not.
Comment by mrfodder — Nov 18, 2008 @ 1:53 pm
I also agree, I wish they would make alot more use of the remote play option! surely it can’t be that hard to be able to play PS3 games remotely? it’s only like a Remote Desktop Connection’eque situation, only the visuals are passed down to the PSP! what’s the point in being able to play old PS1 games on the PS3 when you can copy them to the PSP and play them locally anyway? Also having Settings unlocked within the PS3 when remote playing

Crap ad, like the last one in the series. Fire the ad agency that thought up this completely uninspiring and forgettable idea! I would guess that for all the money spent this will contribute to less than 1% of sales this Christmas, if that!
Sony could have really done something cool to top this years rather crap 360 head ads, instead they make those look good by coming up with something even worse!!!!
Where’s the catchy tune, where’s the hook, where’s the proper eye candy as opposed to a reflection of a MotorStorm crash and a Sackboy that’s made to look like the Marshmallow Man from Ghost Busters!
Comment by Apnomis — Nov 18, 2008 @ 4:04 pm
On a related note, Sony has got the PSP ads bang on this Christmas - catchy tune, informative, shows it’s main features, shows some eye candy etc.
Why not make the PS3 ads the same way? Why not focus on all the different selling points of the console like the PSP ads do?
Comment by Apnomis — Nov 18, 2008 @ 4:06 pm
As the first guy said; a global store would be awesome!
Comment by Sertion — Nov 18, 2008 @ 5:01 pm
Most boring ad ever.
Comment by ThreeSpeechlover — Nov 18, 2008 @ 10:55 pm
Sorry to add to the negativity, but the visual presentation & certainly the music reminded me of a trailer for a slasher/horror movie.
The inclusion of Sackboy in the dominating position just added to the creepy atmosphere. Visually scary & certainly not something I would associate with a family video games entertainment system.
As a suggestion for a different approach, check out the comment made by glennpfc in TheSixthAxis blog entry comment (two entries above my comment) in the link below:

I hate those very ‘Artsy’ adverts they ran last year, it was better once they repositioned it and started showing uncharted trailers. I think Sony could do with copying Nintendo with showing ‘you’ in the advert.
The son playing Ratchet and Clank, followed by the whole family playing LBP or Eyepet and then the 2 parents at night watching a Bluray.
I even have a tag line for them “A day in a ‘Life with Playstation’”…as we near Christmas I expect TV ads to ramp up
—
I’ll also repeat my comment (of 14 November 2008) from the “LittleBigPlanet community content update” blog entry here at ThreeSpeech…
I was adding a comment to a thread at HotUKDeals.com this afternoon in response to a topic about how the free 6-inch ‘Sackboy’ dolls provided with some of the retail versions of “LittleBigPlanet” had ended up on eBay & were being sold in excess of the original cost of the game.
I have transposed my text below just in case Sony don’t hang on my every word…
—
Sony could do with producing some official versions of these (rather than the promotional ones supplied as ‘give-aways’ with the game, or incentives to take out subscriptions to “Official PlayStation Magazine – UK”) & having them on counters in filling stations or by the tills in supermarkets priced for a few quid.
Punters would go (typically) “awwww, he’s so cute…” buy one & hang him (not literally) in their car. Instant promotion for the game. Instant gratification for kids on long journeys. Instant smile for the driver when he or she gets back in the car after a hard day working.
In fact, to differentiate the ones for sale from those previously supplied & stuck on eBay at silly money, the commercial ones could have limited Santa hats for the festive season. Then Easter Bunny ears. Then a sun hat & shades. Then would come the football team branded kit-wearing Sackboys. The Olympic Team GB Sackboys, and the we’re-having-a-post-recession-party-hat-wearing Sackboys. The list is indeed as varied as the many user-created levels available in “LittleBigPlanet” so far.
Then there’s the option of slightly larger ones with buttons in their bellies that play the LittleBigPlanet theme tune for smaller kids (i.e. not adults). Branded lunch boxes for any sized people. McDonald’s/Burger King Kids Meal toys… Keyrings… Pencil cases… Erasers (with or without pencils)… Notepads… etc. etc.
And, of course, Dress-up Sackboy fridge magnets and floating Sackboy for your bathtime fun kits. (Keep it clean, sackpeople).
There’s even the possibility of Stephen Fry reading specially written “The Adventures of Sackboy…” audio books for the younger audience (so that the larger “LittleBigPlanet” fans can leave a CD on & go back to the PS3 when the kids have finally put the controllers down & gone to bed).
Come on Sony. The kids will be breaking up for their Christmas holidays from school soon… get all this stuff out before they go back for the next term (and before the [next] “Next Big Thing” is out)
Finally (or, indeed, initially) “Children In Need” Sackboys & Sackgirls … with profits going to the charity funds.
(“fanpages” is available for employment in the Sony organisation at any time, btw. They just have to ask)

Anybody got any more marketing ideas?

Comment by fanpages — Nov 18, 2008 @ 11:06 pm
@mobiletone,
Yes, because the online moderation is deterring people from buying LBP. Stop talking out of your *** for a change.
As for the ad, well, do Sony actually want to sell any consoles this holiday season? Get a new ad agency, quickly.
Comment by Jay — Nov 19, 2008 @ 12:26 am
negative negative and more negative!
why oh why did you lot buy a Ps3 anyway?
Its at an all time high great games and this is only the start, the ad could be better but sony have allways been a bit strange remmeber the champions league ps2 ads?
Ps3 will dominate the consloe market for serious gamers watch this space!
Comment by andy — Nov 19, 2008 @ 7:12 am
@ 11 andy, I bought a PS3 because I believe it to be the best console this generation and has all the types of games I want to play (most of my collection consist of exclusive titles apart from the major 3rd party juggernauts) and I also buy/rent Blu-rays.
I am negative because the PS3 has a lot to offer but Sony seem incapable of promoting/exploiting it. I know this because I know at least 7 people who went out and bought one on the back of me giving them some basic understanding of what it offers.
I’m negative because I don’t want the console to fail, and there are enough blogs/competitors out there posting negative stories and almost willing it to fail to make it happen if Sony doesn’t fight back.
The fact is the PS3 isn’t failing, it’s selling faster than the 360 did at this point in it’s lifecycle and has clocked up a very respectable 17M sales so far (which will likely increase substantially at the next major price reduction and again when a slim model is released, just like what happened with the PS2). But it could do so much better if Sony start to do so much better! They are their own worst enemy, and paying for generic/forgettable junk like this doesn’t help them!
The fact is, I know when I see an Xbox ad for a game that it’s also on PS3 - but do Joe Public? I know when I see the £129.99 price tag that it’s a stripped down version of a very unreliable console - but do Joe Public? I know that the PS3 has great exclusives this winter like MotorStorm, Resistance 2, KillZone 2, LittleBigPlanet (with the likes of God of War III and Heavy Rain in the pipeline) and I know these games look fantastic - but do Joe Public? I know that as well as playing Blu-rays the PS3 also upscales DVD’s - but do Joe Public? I also know it holds your photos, your mp3s, streams from your PC and plays DivX - but do Joe Public? I know that it links with your PSP and can even act as a Freeview+ system - but do Joe Public? I know online gaming is free and cheap games/free stuff can be downloaded from the Store - but do Joe Public? I know you can get a PSEye and video chat and play (an albeit limited range of) games with your hands Wii-style - but do Joe Public (related to this it baffles me Sony haven’t launched Eye Kinetics 2 on the back of the WiiFit success)?
The above are some of the reason you would choose to buy a £299 PS3; are any of them ever included in their adverts? The answer is no. Will the ads chosen this year help sell PS3’s to Joe Public? The answer is no. Joe Public knows the Wii is cute and family friendly and involves waving your hands; they know that the 360 starts from £129.99, has wide catalogue of games, and an extensive online infrastructure which includes tv/movie downloads; but what do they know about a PS3? They know it’s a PlayStation and… that’s about it…
The worrying things is Sony seems content to leave it at that and let it sell itself! We know it’s a PlayStation, the last two-generations has made that name synonymous with console gaming - this gen we need to know what it offers for £299… there’s probably many Joe Public PS2 owners out there thinking “but I already own a PlayStation?”.
That’s why these posts are negative, for want of a better word it’s out of “love” for the console not “hate”…
Rant Over!

I actually like these sneak preview ads, it will be interesting to see the big advertising campaign which is launching this Friday by Sony, but these ads certainly would make me curious if I didn’t own a ps3 already - I like it.
Comment by Simon — Nov 19, 2008 @ 2:50 pm
@ Jay - the whole moderation/server issues ARE stopping people from buying LBP. in fact people have actually been taking their copies back to the shops and trading it in for just those reasons. people want to play games that do what they promised. not some game where only 50% of it does what it’s supposed to most of the time.
sure. if you only want to play it offline, then fine, it works and is fun, but everything else is just broken.
Comment by mobiletone — Nov 19, 2008 @ 6:58 pm
Why can SONY never create ads, posters, commercials etc… that detail the actual product?
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Nov 19, 2008 @ 11:39 pm
…is this set of advertisements going to culminate with an announcement of a 40Gb PS3 console for £199.99 from the first week of December?
I hope so… otherwise all the (cost of the) TV advertisements for “Mirror’s Edge” & cinema trailers for “Resistance 2” that are promoting the Playstation 3 are going to be wasted as a prospective customer base buys a cheaper console, not because of a global economic downturn and their own concerns over disposable income, but because organisations competing in the same market present the details that everybody understands.
I know marketing is a difficult job, and everybody thinks they can do it better, but please do something different. The second anniversary of the availability of the PS3 has now passed. Try the novel approach of relaying facts to the general public, not artistic presentations that look like something Channel 4 would produce to announce a new series of a soap opera.
Thank you.
I am also waiting for the “LittleBigPlanet” videos on the small screen, or the silver screen, so I do not have to spend any more of my lunch breaks explaining to confused customers in GAME or HMV that it really is a title that everyone will enjoy, not just kids (aged 7+).
BFN,
fp.

@11
Apnomis is spot on. We’re not slamming the PS3 ads because we relish the idea of a good moan. We’re critical because we care about the PS3’s success.
The PS3 SHOULD dominate the console market, but there are a lot of things they need to get right first.
Wii is a better party console and XBox 360 has a far superior online and social gaming service. These are things that should belong to the PS3.
Sony need to get their fingures out!!

Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing 2008
Posted by Talk Playstation
on Nov.23, 2008 at 11:12 am
Two days ago in London was the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing. An anonymous source going by the alias of ‘Legends’has tipped D+PAD magazine massive Playstation news, here’s what was said.
Price cuts coming in March, PS3 performing better in PAL territories than 360
“Our source tells us that SCEE President David Reeves took to the stage to discuss the current economic climate and how it shouldn’t affect PlayStation business, though was quick to mention that SCEE will be getting more competitive in price from March 2009 onwards. Our guess is that we’ll be seeing price cuts to PS3 around Easter to tie in with the release of Killzone 2…
Reeves then went on to say that the PS3 has a bigger install base than the 360 in PAL territories, and that the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009. Apparently SCEE is the success story of the SCE divisions, generating more profit than SCEA and SCEJ. 2008 sees it ‘in the black’ in profit our inside man revealed. Apparently there are more technological innovations to come for both PS3 and PSP, but details weren’t disclosed.”
